Après les albums The Secrets Of The Black Arts et Vobiscum Satanas, et surtout un silence discographique de deux ans, les furieux Black-Metalleux satanistes de DARK FUNERAL prennent leur public à contre-pied en enregistrant le EP Tear Children To Workship Satan.
Si le but officiel de ce mini-disque est de reprendre des morceaux de groupes ayant influencé les membres de DARK FUNERAL, il s’agit surtout de faire acte de présence auprès des fans en attendant la sortie d’un « vrai » album. Comme d’habitude, le line-up instable a vu le départ du guitariste Typhos (remplacé par Matti Mäkelä dit Dominion) et surtout du batteur Alzazmon (auquel succède Robert Lundin dit Gaahnfaust, qui avait déjà assuré un bref intérim quelques années auparavant).
Reste qu’on ne sait pas trop qui joue vraiment sur cet EP, étant donné la pauvreté du solo joué par un certain Larsa sur la reprise de SLAYER, « Dead Skin Mask ». Faire regretter un solo de Kerry King ou Jeff Hanneman tient quand même de l’exploit … On ne peut pas dire que les reprises de SODOM (« Remember The Fallen »), KING DIAMOND (« The Trial ») et MAYHEM (« Pagan Fears ») soient réellement transcendées. Et mis à part cette dernière, leur influence sur le style de DARK FUNERAL reste à démontrer !
Tear Children To Workship Satan vaut quand même le détour grâce au seul titre inédit composé pour l’occasion, “An Apprentice Of Satan”, où la griffe de Lord Ahriman est largement identifiable. Voilà un nouveau titre incontournable pour les futurs shows de DARK FUNERAL.
