TAO MENIZOO. Un nom qui appelle à réflexion puisqu’il semble que personne n’arrive à comprendre ce que cela veut dire. Font-ils référence au grand Tao chinois ? N’est-ce qu’un nom aux sonorités agréables et énigmatiques ? En tous cas avec un tel nom, je ne m’attendais pas forcément à découvrir une musique aussi rentre dedans que celle qui se trouve sur ce deuxième album autoproduit, So Blind. Je pensais à quelque chose de plus cajoleur, un rien câlineur et pas de me retrouver entre les bras d’un gros barbu aussi délicat qu’une esthéticienne bien décidée à vous faire le maillot à la râpe à fromage.
De fait, tout commence avec « Words Of Wrath », le titre le plus brutal de l’album. Violent et rapide, il ne s’arrête pas une seule seconde pour octroyer la moindre concession. Bon, autant le dire, je n’ai pas été séduit par ce morceau. D’ailleurs, la première écoute m’a laissé un peu froid. Puis, j’ai découvert un peu mieux le quarté gagnant qui suit : « Deathwish », « So Blind », « My Funeral » et « Not Even God ». Et là, ces quatre morceaux ont suffit à me faire écouter le groupe d’une autre manière. « Deathwish » et sa rythmique hachée. « So Blind » et son refrain hypnotique. « My Funeral » au timbre mélancolique. Et « Nor Even God » et sa puissance. Il faudra ensuite attendre « Crushed By Illusion » et « Mind Control Cults » pour retrouver cet attrait par la suite. Eh oui, les morceaux qui se trouvent entre m’ont laissé un peu sur ma faim. Je n’ai pas accroché. Par contre, ceux cités sont bons. On y retrouve des influences Death et Thrash incontestable. Sans oublier une pointe de Heavy par moment. Et un son résolument Hardcore avec une basse bien claquante, un peu comme on avait pu le voir en son temps sur Among The Living d’ANTHRAX. Le tout servi par une production froide, glacial même, comme si elle avait été réalisée en plein günz. Même si j’ai cru que la production était mauvaise au début, je pense plutôt que c’est un effet recherché par le groupe. Et puis, il y a aussi l’effet autoproduction qui doit jouer un peu.
TAO MENIZOO signe donc ici un album qui a du bon, et du moins bon. A vous de piocher les morceaux qui vous parleront. Mais, c’est certain, ce groupe a du potentiel.
