Haaaa, voici enfin le THE OCEAN nouveau. J’avais vraiment hâte d’écouter ce que le collectif allemand allait nous servir, après les avoir découvert sur scène et avoir apprécié leur précédent album, Aeolian. Et pour le coup je ne suis pas déçu, Precambrian est un petit chef-d’œuvre. Dès l’ouverture du digipack, on sent qu’ils se sont surpassés : deux livrets avec des encres noires différentes pour créer un contraste, ceux-ci se dégagent pour laisser apparaître un fond rouge magmatique qui illustre le thème de l’album. Precambrian raconte en fait la genèse de notre Terre, chaque titre représentant en fait une ère géologique, de la formation de la planète jusqu’à l’apparition des premières formes de vies.
Le premier cd, "Hadean/Archaean" reprend les choses là ou Aeolian les a laissé. Un Metal moderne, avec des rythmiques complexes et des structures tentaculaires (on peut penser à MESHUGGAH ou encore MASTODON par moment), le tout porté par le chant devastateur de Robin Staps et ses potes. C’est le moment de présenter le collectif de THE OCEAN. Il s’agit donc d’un groupe de Metal "classique" sur lequel viennent se greffer un ensemble de musiciens utilisant des instruments variés : violon, alto, violon celle, glockenspiel, saxophone, piano et j’en passe… plus un nombre impressionant de guests chanteurs, à savoir Nate Newton de CONVERGE, Dwid Hellion d'INTEGRITY, Caleb Scofield de CAVE-IN, Eric Kalsbeek de TEXTURES et bien d’autres… pour un total de 26 musiciens.
La deuxième gallette est intitulée "Proterozoic". Nous avons à faire ici à une version plus fine et contrastée du THE OCEAN que nous connaissons. Ca continue de tabasser sèvére évidemment, mais l’instrumentation est enrichie de tous les instruments cités plus haut. Les passages calmes amènes des murs de guitares gigantesques, l’émotion dégagée est intense, la plupart des titres dépassent les 8 minutes, mais on ne s’ennui pas une seconde. Des exemples ? Le gouffre abyssal de "Rhycian", l’entêtement de "Statherian", la beauté de "Stenian"… que des perles magnifiées par les textes de Baudelaire, Nietzsche, de Lautréamont ou par les propres mots de Robin Staps. Un mot sur la production, juste excellente, égale à ce que à quoi ils nous ont habitués. Que dire de plus ? Leur musique est d’une richesse extraordinaire qui ne tourne jamais en rond, pourtant on reconnaît leur patte instantanément. Incontestablement la marque des grands.
Je vous conseil d’appréhender Precambrian comme une œuvre intégrale (artwork, paroles et musique), leur univers est ailleurs mais pas impénétrable. Tant qu’on aura des artistes qui se déméneront pour sortir des albums de cette trempe, avec un emballage aussi somptueux, je me dit que le Metal a encore de beaux jours devant lui.

"Precambrian est notre réaction face à la fugacité et au caractère éphémère infligées par myspace, face à la notion post-moderne de la musique comme une donnée quantifiable, contre la perception de la musique en terme de combien d'espace cela prend sur votre disque dur... C'est un album pour les gens qui croient encore en l'idée qu'un album peut être plus, et devrait être plus, que la somme de ses chansons".
