Qui ne connaît pas MICHELLE DARKNESS ici ? Boouuuuh, honte sur vous ! Nan, je déconne…
Et bien Michelle est le (oui, le) chanteur de l’excellent groupe de Metal Gothique Allemand END OF GREEN. Pendant l’enregistrement du successeur de Dead End Dreaming, Michelle s’est senti des velléités de solitude et s’est retiré dans sa crypte pour composer ces quelques odes aux ténèbres. Jusque là, pourquoi pas. Mais l’écoute de ce Brand New Drug pose une question fondamentale : pourquoi ? Les chansons de Michelle sont exactement dans le même style de END OF GREEN, à savoir un Rock Metal bien lourd et puissant, sachant se faire mélodique quand il le faut. L’élément le plus significatif est la voix justement, un chant clair très grave, proche de TYPE O NEGATIVE. Les ressemblances ne s’arrêtent pas là puisque la pochette de l’album est aussi très inspirée par l’artwork du groupe de Peter Steele.
Toutes les chansons de l’album sont très agréables à écouter, il n’y a rien à jeter, mais rien à mettre en avant non plus. L’album est digéré en deux ou trois écoutes. On sent que Michelle a voulu se faire plaisir avec cet album mais il aurait du prendre plus de risques et sortir des sentiers battus pour le rendre réellement intéressant. A noter la présence de Hanna Pakarinen, la jeune gagnante de l’émission télévisée « Idols », pour une reprise de bonne facture du tube de JOY DIVISION : « Love Will Tears Us Appart », ainsi que de Mika Taurianen (ENTWINE) sur la chanson « Hatethings » et enfin Christian Hector (AHAB et MIDNATTSOL) sur le titre « Forgotten Sun ».
Brand New Drug est un bon album qui permettra quand même aux fans inconditionnels de END OF GREEN de patienter en attendant le prochain album.
