A en croire le sieur Hansen, Majestic représentait le côté obscur de GAMMA RAY. Moi, je veux bien, j’ai beau réécouté leur précédent opus, on reste toutefois très éloigné du Funeral Doom. Toujours est-il que ce Land Of The Free II se veut animer d’une énergie positive. Pourtant, les refrains faciles et les sonorités Power se font plus discrets avec un rendu plus Heavy, et au final moins accrocheur. Et que dire de ces emprunts à peine voilés aux compos de IRON MAIDEN ? Il suffit d’écouter « Opportunity » : cela n’en est pas seulement évident mais bel et bien gênant (« The Clairvoyant », « Rime Of The Ancient Mariner »). Peut-on reprocher au même Kai Hansen de piocher dans la discographie de HELLOWEEN, qui fut aussi la sienne, puisque « To Mother Earth » fait clairement penser au « How Many Tears » période Walls Of Jericho ? Il n’empêche que ce manque d’inspiration est quelque peu affligeant. Et quand GAMMA RAY se veut épique, cela reste parfois bien mou : ainsi, sur les chœurs de « Leaving Hell », on aurait souhaité plus d’entrain. Qui plus est, on avait connu Kai Hansen plus en voix… en voie d’extinction ? Tel est le constat que l’on serait tenté de dresser quant à l’évolution de GAMMA RAY. Land Of The Free II n’est pas foncièrement mauvais mais on fait nettement mieux dans le genre. Il reste toutefois de bonnes surprises, comme le mélodique « Empress » (un des rares titres que Kai Hansen n’ait pas composés sur cet album et que l’on doit au batteur Daniel Zimmermann), le Power « Hear Me Calling » et enfin un « Insurrection » de onze minutes, aux accents maideniens marqués mais particulièrement sympathique grâce notamment aux solos de Hansen. On était toutefois en droit d’en attendre plus d’un groupe qui fut l’un des fers de lance de la scène Power européenne. Les Allemands ont par ailleurs fait le choix délicat de rejoindre leurs compatriotes de HELLOWEEN dans les rangs de Steamhammer/SPV : le label aura-t-il autant d’énergie à consacrer à ces deux formations ? Rien n’est moins sûr. GAMMA RAY a peut-être quitté le côté obscur, mais il risque désormais d’évoluer dans l’ombre d’autres combos plus inspirés que lui.
