ALKIMYA, c’est un peu la manière de réconcilier le Metal Progressif de nos jours avec le Rock Progressif des années 70. Le groupe ne cache pas d’avoir, à travers leur musique, les pieds dans les deux univers et essaye de mélanger cette sauce qui pourrait paraître singulière en n’y prenant pas garde. Pour ma part, j’ai trouvé qu’il rendait plutôt bien ce mélange, même s’il est définitivement plus tourné Rock que Metal. La production joue peut-être aussi mais les compositions ne sont pas orientées vers la violence inhérente au Metal, aussi mélodique et progressif qu’il puisse être.
Les membres du groupe ont la maîtrise de leur instrument. Cela ne fait aucun doute. Et ils savent aussi que trop de technique tue la technique. Donc, ils savent faire preuve de sobriété quand cela est nécessaire. C’est aussi cela avoir de la bouteille. Parce qu’ALKIMYA n’est pas leur premier essai et cela se sent. Nous n’avons pas à faire à des petits jeunes qui montent pour la première fois sur les planches (même s’il faut bien toujours passer par une première fois). Et la musique s’en ressent. Maturité dans les sons, dans les riffs, dans les compositions.
Pourquoi alors ne pas mieux noter ce groupe ? Tout simplement parce que j’ai trouvé qu’il manquait quelque chose aux morceaux. Un rien de cohérence par moment pour en faire un tout qui s’écoute de bout en bout en y prenant plaisir. C’est toujours le piège du progressif : mettre beaucoup de riffs bout à bout sans liens entre eux. Et malgré leur expérience, j’ai eu l’impression qu’ALKIMYA est tombé dans ce piège. Pas tout le temps. Seulement, quand ce n’est pas le cas, ce sont des riffs un peu plus plats que j’ai trouvé. Pourtant, il y a des parties qui sont vraiment énormes, comme la reprise dans un tempo et un rythme chamboulé sur « Martyr Child ». Un vrai moment trippant aux sonorités progressives mais qui empruntent aussi à IRON MAIDEN dans l’ambiance. Très bon.
Donc, le potentiel est là, la technique aussi. Ne reste plus que le petit quelque chose essentiel.
