GRAVE DIGGER c’est un peu comme le Label Rouge pour le jambon : c’est un gage de qualité. Mais ça reste du jambon ! Eh bien là, c’est pareil : on sait que ça va être du boulot sérieux, mais ça reste basique.
Voilà 20 ans que GRAVE DIGGER nous offre le même menu, essentiellement composé de riffs convenus et d’un chant rocailleux. Alors, bien sûr, avec une telle expérience, il est difficile de les accuser de faire n’importe quoi. Le groupe maîtrise son sujet – et pour cause, il ne connaît que celui-là ! Il en ressort des titres que tout amateur de Heavy Metal ne peut qu’apprécier : « Liberty Or Death » et son riff efficace, les lents « Until The Last King Dies » et « Silent Revolution », « Terrible One » et son rythme endiablé agrémenté d’un refrain percutant, sans oublier l’excellent « Forecourt To Hell ». Bref, cet album réserve beaucoup d’occasions de se réjouir et l’on aurait tord de ne pas en profiter.
On note quelques faiblesses : « Shadowland » n’est pas désagréable mais GRAVE DIGGER pousse un peu loin le bouchon du classicisme. Quand à « Massada », malgré une intro très prometteuse, elle s’effondre littéralement dès l’apparition du couplet.
Comme tout les albums de GRAVE DIGGER, Liberty Or Death est une sorte de caricature du Heavy Metal teuton : absence totale d’originalité, paroles au ras des pâquerettes, interprétation impersonnelle, etc. Mais les amateurs de ce style sauront l’apprécier à sa juste valeur.
