3 ans après un premier album remarquable, les Anglais sont de retour pour ce nouvel opus que nous attendions fébrilement. Pas de gros changements sur l’orientation musicale puisqu’on retrouve ce Rock assez indéfinissable : du Metal, certes, avec de grosses guitares saturées, du Rock, du Stoner pour la lourdeur de l’ensemble, et surtout une ambiance générale assez singulière qui fait penser au regretté LOUD ou encore, plus récemment, à TOOL.
En maître de cette hybridation de styles, AMPLIFIER avait concocté des titres énormes se gravant directement dans les esprits. C’est hélas moins concluant sur ce second opus qui reprend fidèlement l’orientation musicale du précédent mais en perdant sérieusement sa faculté d’attirer durablement l’attention. La première écoute est franchement décevante, surtout si on la compare à la première écoute de l’album précédent qui nous avait donner l’impression de découvrir quelque chose d’énorme. Et il faudra de très nombreuses écoutes pour finalement s’imprégner de ces nouvelles compositions. C’est seulement à ce prix que l’on parvient à percevoir la complexité des compositions et leur intérêt. Sans doute involontairement, Insider est un album plus intime, plus occulte que son prédécesseur. Et, disons-le, moins réussi.
Grâce à ces ambiances envoûtantes, à ce prodige consistant à alterner sans que l’on s’en rende compte la lourdeur de la rythmique et les passages planants, grâce à quelques petites trouvailles (clavier de machine à écrire,…), grâce surtout au chant de Sel Balamir, AMPLIFIER demeure un groupe unique mais on ne peut s’empêcher de penser que 3 ans après un chef d’œuvre, on en attendait bien davantage.
