Ne pas se fier aux apparences, surtout pas ! Derek Sherinian (ex-DREAM THEATER, Alice Cooper) ne s’est pas reconverti dans le pure Heavy Metal contrairement à ce que la jaquette, au demeurant fort réussie, pourrait laisser croire. Non, le claviériste donne dans le Hard instrumental exclusivement même si on trouve deux morceaux chantés sur ce CD.
Hard instrumental disais-je, prodigué au clavier ? Ouille, ça sent le démonstratif stérile, les gammes fastidieuses, les parties pompeuses.
Eh bien non ! Certes ce disque s’adresse aux amateurs de techniques mais sait se montrer convainquant par bien des aspects.
En effet, il possède un son bien Heavy, une musicalité en exergue mais qui n’exclue pas loin s’en faut un sens de la mélodie des plus remarquable, des guest stars de renom (Zakk Wylde, Malmsteen, Slash, John Petrucci, etc.), des compos soignées, bref tout pour passer un agréable moment.
Deux morceaux chantés donc. Le premier intitulé « ManWith No Name » voit le père Zakk Wylde pousser la chansonnette et ce de belle manière. Le gaillard est décidément un chanteur doué et c’est ma foi bien dommage qu’il se disperse trop avec son BLACK LABEL SOCIETY qui propose certes du gros Heavy marinant dans un jus sudiste du meilleur effet mais malheureusement aussi de bien fadasses ballades.
Le second voit Billy Idol s’accoquiner avec Slash. Subtile et intéressante alliance s’écrierons les puristes ! Hum sauf que le morceau en question, « In The Summertime » présente une country pas très réussi et symbolise à lui tout seul le manque d’unité de ce disque. La diversité, oui très bien. Les disques « catalogue », non merci !
Un peu de cohésion ne ferait pas de mal à l’ensemble mais le sieur Sherinian est décidemment bien doué derrière ses claviers et peut s’avérer être à l’occasion, un compositeur subtil.
A approfondir donc mais ce Blood Of The Snake laisse augurer le meilleur pour la suite.
