Voilà maintenant 8 ans que DYING WISH, groupe des alentours de Lyon, s’est lancé dans l’aventure du Metal. Après quelques changements de line-up et pauses prolongées, le groupe trouve ses marques et sort un premier EP en 2005. Dès les premières notes on sent que la formation ne fait pas du Metal juste pour se divertir. Les compositions sont bien ficelées, mais surtout elles surprennent. Le groupe réussit le tour de force de faire un vrai Heavy/Death, à tel point qu’on ne peut isoler l’influence dominante. L’album sonne autant comme un IN FLAMES que comme un album de BLIND GUARDIAN. La musique est dans l’ensemble mid-tempo, parsemée d’éléments mélodiques. Le chant évolue souvent entre les deux registres, alternant voix claires et cris gutturaux dans la pure tradition scandinave. Enfin pour obtenir ce Sentenced, le groupe a saupoudré ses chansons d’une bonne dose d’Hard US. Le résultat alourdit un peu les titres, mais leur donne une identité propre. Le chant emprunte beaucoup aux voix rocailleuses de ce style.
Il est certainement difficile de s’imaginer à quoi peut bien ressembler une musique aux influences apparemment contradictoires. Il est d’ailleurs autant malaisé de la décrire ! Le ton global est assez dépressif et mélancolique (à cause du mid-tempo), voir un peu mou (comme la semi-balade « Tears » qui se fait une peu longue au bout de 3 minutes). Le groupe n’est certes pas présenté à son avantage, Sentenced est un premier EP autoproduit avec les défauts que cela implique : son un peu moyen, manque d’arrangements. Le chant de Francis est parfois limite, on sent qu’il n’est pas totalement à l’aise sur ses parties et que l’expérience bonifiera ces vocaux. A moins que les conditions d’enregistrements aient été difficiles.
DYING WISH est certainement un groupe à suivre. La conjugaison d’influences Heavy, Death et Hard US et suffisamment un défi en soi pour que la formation mérite une oreille attentive. Cet EP est un premier geste pour accrocher de futurs auditeurs, et j’espère qu’il portera suffisamment pour aboutir sur un album avec des moyens de production suffisants.
