FIVE HORSE JOHNSON (usa) - The Mystery Spot (2006)

C’est sur le fameux label Small Stone que FIVE HORSE JOHNSON sort sa sixième production. Donc pas besoin de signaler que le groupe évolue dans un genre assez Old School, militant pour un revival du bon vieux Hard Rock n’ Roll. Pas de concession donc pour ce groupe bien Américain dans l’âme. Alors oui, on a à faire a du déjà vu, mais du bon ! Ce vieux Rock est exécuté avec une grande classe, se complaisant dans le cliché musical du Southern Rock sans jamais tomber dans le ridicule. Cet album nous plonge allègrement dans un univers où la bière et les grosses cylindrées règnent en maître. Débutant sur les chapeaux de roues avec un riff bien gras, on sent que les musiciens sont parfaitement à leur aise, dans leur élément. L’ensemble parait très fluide, et on a vraiment l’impression de se retrouver au fin fond du désert américain, il y a quelques dizaines d’années de ça. L’album saura jouer sur l’ensemble des couleurs relatives à cette atmosphère. Parfois agressif avec une voix très rocailleuse, parfois plus calme avec un tempo lent et une basse bien ronde. La guitare saura jouer de sa saturation sans trop en abuser, avec d’agréables solos collant vraiment à l’esprit. On aura même droit a de belles sonorités Country, notamment avec le début de « …Of Ditch Diggers And Drowning Men » où la guitare sèche jouée au Bottle Neck apporte une agréable légèreté. De plus, la présence de l’harmonica sur la plupart des compos sera aussi la bienvenue, renforçant encore plus cette ambiance rustique. Et puis les quelques notes Stoner sur « I Can’t Shake It » sont à tomber. Un grand bravo au guitariste dont le feeling n’est plus à démontrer. D’ailleurs, cet album ressemble vraiment à une réunion de musiciens qui aiment faire du bon vieux rock, car au groupe de base formé de trois personnes s’en ajoute cinq qui viennent montrer ce qu’ils savent faire. Au final on trouve donc un aspect assez convivial à cet album qui, malgré sa redondance et son manque de nouveauté, se révèle fort sympathique.
