Ecouter un tribute album d’un groupe aussi culte que SCORPIONS, ça fait toujours un peu peur. Ici, l’idée est de faire jouer les parties musicales à un même groupe et de changer de chanteur sur chaque morceau. C’est toujours mieux que de se coltiner les éternels groupes pourris cherchant par tous les moyens à faire parler d’eux. Et le casting n’est pas idiot puisque la guitare est assurée par un George Lynch en forme, qui semble avoir trouvé le juste compromis entre fidélité aux morceaux d’origine et ré-interprétation à sa sauce. Seuls les puristes purs et durs pourront se plaindre de ses interventions.
Ça démarre plutôt bien avec un « Rock You Like A Hurricane » énergique, en guise de mise en bouche. Aux premières notes de « Still Loving You » on a un peu peur, mais finalement Steve Whiteman s’en sort très honorablement. Sa version est assez conforme à l’originale mais le changement de chanteur apporte un aspect inédit. Beaucoup d’autres morceaux méritent une écoute : « Blackout » avec la voix criarde de Stevie Rachelle et un George Lynch qui se permet quelques libertés supplémentaires. Chacun aura probablement sa préférence, mais il serait injuste de dénigrer cet album qui remplit sa mission sans génie mais avec une certaine efficacité.
Aux puristes cités plus haut, nous déconseillons l’écoute de « Steam Rock Ferver », d’ailleurs moyennement convaincante.
Seule énorme déception, la version lamentable de « Big City Lights » à laquelle on été ajouté des percussions insupportables qui empêchent de profiter du chant de Kevin DuBrow (QUIET RIOT) qui avait pourtant l’air de s’être investit. En outre son chant est mixé en retrait.
La production de l’ensemble est inégale, le son est parfois très cru ; elle laisse évidemment deviner un coup de fric facile.
Quoi qu’il en soit, même si cet album n’apporte pas grand chose de nouveau, il aura quand même permis de passer un bon moment et surtout, il aura donné envie de réécouter SCORPIONS, ce que les productions récentes du groupe nous avaient dissuadé de faire !
