Cult Of Catharsis, groupe originaire de Bergen, fief légendaire de Black Metal, revient de très loin livre par le biais de ce split CD contenant cinq titres dérivant de ce qu’ils avaient déjà enregistré à l’époque de « Lord Of The Gallows », un EP qui aurait dû paraître, mais suite à la faillite de leur maison de disque de l’époque, cela n’a malheureusement jamais pu se faire ! Grâce à Aftermath Music, nous avons en conséquence l’occasion de juger ces cinq morceaux.
Ce qui étonne d’emblée est l’omniprésence des nappes de synthés, rappelant par moments les premiers Dimmu Borgir, période « Stormblast ». Bonne référence. Cult Of Catharsis, même s’ils n’innovent en rien le style propose un Black Metal ultra mélodique et entraînant, le tout agrémenté par des leads au synthés et des riffs plutôt Heavy pour un groupe de Black Metal ! On retrouve d’ailleurs l’aspect épique si propre à la “touch” norvégienne en termes de Black Metal mélodique. La production rêche et les compositions soignées rendent donc ces cinq titres plaisants. Cult Of Cathatsis n’existe plus en tant que groupe à part entière puisque les musiciens évoluent pour la plupart dans des projets parallèles plus renommé, comme Aeternus pour V’Gandr, le chanteur/bassiste !
Néanmoins, une sensation étrange s’échappe de l’écoute de ce groupe qui donne l’air de ne jamais avoir existé !
Dommage que l’expérience n’ait pas donné suite…
Existant depuis 1994, Opus Forgotten a longtemps été un membre anonyme de la scène Black Metal norvégienne. Des changements de line up intempestifs ont provoqué de nombreux délais et problèmes durant des années, si bien qu’en terme de discographie, la seule production à leur actif est un EP de sept titres paru en 2000 sous le nom de « Demon Of Destruction » !
En revanche, avec dix ans d’expérience derrière eux, les Opus Forgotten combinent un Black traditionnel norvégien de qualité avec une atmosphère mélodique unique en ayant recours au violon ! Cette utilisation n’empêche en rien leur Black Metal d’être plus nerveux et speedé que celui de Cult Of Catharsis !
D’ailleurs, les titres sont étonnement construits comme s’il s’agissait de morceaux à la limite du Thrash, seuls les parties vocales et la dominance du violon dans les lignes mélodiques sont là pour nous rappeler qu’il s’agit bien de Black mélodique ! Le morceau « Bloodfrozen Memories » reste tout de même plus fidèle aux canons du Black Metal typique, avec ses rythmiques de guitares froides, aigues et acérées ! Eux aussi n’existant plus, Opus Forgotten délivre avec « Unleash The Fury » un opus oublié : une appellation prémonitoire ?
Une œuvre posthume qui a bien fait d’être exhumée puisque on peut la réhabiliter à sa juste valeur : du bon Black Metal mélodique à la norvégienne !
