ETERNAL REIGN est un groupe de Heavy Metal qui assume cette appellation mais qui a souhaité compléter ses compositions par des touches progressives assez légères. L’atout principal de cette formation teutonne est donc l’efficacité, même si elle prend parfois des chemins détournés. Et l’on doit admettre tout au long de l’écoute de leur second album que le résultat est plutôt réussi car aucun des 10 morceaux (plus une intro) ne sombre dans le bourrinage ou dans la complexité gratuite ; deux excès que l’on constate si souvent. L’aspect progressif du style est constitué par des breaks qui enrichissent les compositions qui ne sont jamais déstructurées. On est donc bien loin du progressif alambiqué qui penche parfois du côté du jazz.
On pourra aussi louer les musiciens qui accomplissent parfaitement leur tâche ; avec une mention spéciale pour le chanteur, Dirk Stühmer, qui passe du style d’Andy B. Franck (BRAINSTORM) à celui de King Diamond avec une aisance déconcertante.
Le seul problème (mais de taille) avec ce Forbidden Path est qu’on n’en retire pas grand chose. Certes l’écoute est fort agréable et ne souffre aucune critique sérieuse, cependant il est difficile d’avoir un air en tête même après 3 ou 4 écoutes. Seul le refrain de “The Edge Of The World” (assez proche de BRAINSTORM justement) marque davantage les esprits.
Attention : sur la version promo, les titres 4, 5 et 6 ne sont pas dans le bon ordre par rapport à la playlist. C’est peut-être aussi le cas sur les versions commercialisées.
