Jeff Scott Soto peut sérieusement prétendre être le chanteur ayant participé au plus grand nombre de projets : Malmsteen, EYES, TAKARA, HUMANIMAL, JSS, TALISMAN,... et maintenant SOUL SIRKUS ! Oui, mais là c’est du sérieux ; un coup d’œil sur le line up suffit à nous en convaincre puisque Neal Schon, le guitariste de JOURNEY, est de l’aventure. Ce duo tonitruant est accompagné de Marco Mendoza (WHITESNAKE, THIN LIZZY) à la basse et Virgil Donati (Steve Vai, RING OF FIRE) à la batterie. De quoi saliver…
Il est vrai que c’est probablement le meilleur album studio que Jeff Scott Soto ait livré depuis longtemps. Car si, rappelons-le, nous avions été admiratifs devant ses performances live, ses productions studio manquaient toutes de ce petit “quelque chose”.
Comme à son habitude, le vocaliste se jette corps et âme dans ce nouveau projet et, outre son chant sublime, il apporte un enthousiasme communicatif.
Les parties de guitares sont très soignées, on s’en serait douté. Mais la présence de Schon n’est pas aussi probante que prévue. D’abord parce que le guitariste en fait des tonnes, au point de laisser l’impression qu’il veut tirer la couverture à lui. Un peu comme s’il voulait nous faire remarquer qu’il a été injustement oublié dans la liste des guitar-heros. Le plus troublant est qu’il adopte le style et le son de Eddie Van Halen à de nombreuses reprises, ce dont il pouvait se passer. Steve Vai a aussi droit à sa petite imitation maison sur “Close The Door”. Enfin, les phrasés de “Coming Home” sont presque note pour note ceux de “In The End Of Time” écrit pour HARDLINE 13 ans plus tôt.
Toutefois, il serait injuste d’en tenir rigueur à l’ensemble du groupe et à cet album en particulier qui est de bonne qualité et qui renferme quelques titres très forts. C’est le cas de “Highest Ground” qui ouvre le bal, mais aussi de la sublime “Periled Divide” (l’album aurait dû être écrit à l’image de cette chanson ) ou du Zeppelinien “Another World”. Le single “New Position” est également très efficace mais il transpire le VAN HALEN !
L’album se termine par un morceau caché qui aurait pu le rester.
Une version limitée contiendra un DVD incluant deux vidéos, une interview et des scènes backstage.
