Avec des influences allant de MOTLEY CRUE à Elvis (!), des NEW YORK DOLLS à TYPE O NEGATIVE en passant par Billy Idol, il est inutile et même futile de leur chercher des poux en prétextant que le groupe n’a pas son identité propre. En réalité, ces Finlandais ont synthétisé leurs inspirations et ont évolué dans leur écriture. Que l’on aime ou pas le résultat est un autre débat.
Ce nouvel opus est plus Rock que les deux précédents et Jyrki s’est appliqué à modifier légèrement le timbre de sa voix afin de moins se confondre avec Peter Steele. Le groupe a semblé souhaiter réintégrer des petites touches “glam” de ces premiers albums. Par contre la production est très actuelle, elle est même magistrale et permet à des titres typiquement gothiques tel que “Syster Of Charity” de prendre toute leur dimension et de s’imposer sans problème parmi les chefs d’œuvres du genre.
“Plus Rock” cela signifie beaucoup de guitare, ce n’est donc pas pour nous déplaire que les riffs rugissent sur les singles “Lost Boys” et “Devils”.
Par contre, les qualités de cet album sont moins évidentes que pour les précédents. Il faut insister un peu, le réécouter pour se familiariser. Je ne suis pas le seul à avoir ressenti cela. D’habitude c’est mauvais signe, cela signifie que l’album n’est pas terrible mais que l’on fini par s’y habituer ; ici c’est différent : on a le sentiment d’être passé à coté lors de la première écoute et d’avoir eu une sorte de “révélation” progressive avec les écoutes suivantes. C’est pourtant assez mystérieux car il s’agit d’un excellent album avec peu de moments faibles.
THE 69 EYES confirme ici un talent déjà évident qui mériterait une plus grande place sur la scène nationale.
