Qu'est-ce que le Stoner ?
Powertrip fait partie de la grande famille des disques qui marquent une rupture profonde dans la carrière d'un groupe. En matière de rupture, il y a de petits divorces à l'amiable et il y a des séismes de 18 de magnitude sur l'échelle de Richter. Powertrip est de cette engeance. Ce n'est pas juste un changement de cap, c'est une révolution. Le groupe emmené par le bouillonnant Dave Wyndorf n'abandonne pas seulement son Stoner perché et enfumé, il tourne résolument le dos à un univers onirique fait de fumettes, de visions, de mandalas et de gentils taureaux. Dès l'artwork, on comprend qu'on a changé d'univers. Un quatuor patibulaire tout en cuir encadrent un Dave Wyndorf à moustache en croc et Ray Ban à verres miroir. La fine équipe pose devant un mur de flamme engloutissant les restes d'un drapeau américain. Au premier plan, un sceptre en or forme une mano cornuta. A l'intérieur, on retrouve le même gang entouré de strip teaseuses en bikini à paillettes et noyés sous une pluie de dollars. On a rarement fait plus bad taste et bling bling… mais dans le genre déclaration de changement d'intention, difficile de faire plus éloquent !
L'artwork ne fait qu'annoncer la couleur. L'évolution musicale de la galette est à l'avenant. Fini les pistes contemplatives et vaporeuses, place à un bon gros Heavy Metal qui cogne là où il faut. Certes il est toujours questions de drogues, mais on passe de la gentille fumette au free base et du gobage de champignons aux rails de coke en mode Tony Montana.
Cette transition a sorti le groupe de l'underground pour le précipiter sur le devant de la scène en sacrifiant le psychédélisme perché et contemplatif de ses trois premiers albums sur l'autel d'un Heavy Metal de fou furieux. Si les fans de la première heure ont été déboussolés par cette mutation complète, le résultat ne manque pas de sel. Dans son genre (nouveau), Powertrip est ce qui se fait de mieux. C'est un album bourré de chansons dantesques, d'hymnes enragés comme "Powertrip", "Bummer", "Temple of your dreams" et surtout l'imparable et absolu "Spacelord".
Selon la légende, sitôt sa tournée Dopes to Infinity terminée, Dave Wyndorf a pris l'avion pour Las Vegas et s'est enfermé dans une chambre d'hôtel à 10 miles de la cité du vice. Là il a construit son nouvel album en trois semaines à raison d'une chanson par jour. Les 13 brûlots du disque sont tous inspirés d'expériences vécues par Wyndorf à Vegas et pourraient constituer un guide touristique trash à base de drogues, alcools, pole dance, jeu, argent perdu... un road trip de crevard en mode gonzo qui n'aurait pas déplu à Hunter S Thomson. "See you in hell" est ainsi inspiré d'une histoire qu'un hippie a raconté à Dave Wyndorf pendant un voyage en bus. Le hippie expliquait que lui et sa femme avaient tué leur bébé et l'avaient enterré dans un parc national du New Jersey !
Malgré sa longueur inhabituelle, le disque se déguste de la première à la dernière piste. Wyndorf ne commet aucun faux pas, ne comble pas les vides avec du remplissage à la gomme. La tracklist cohérente, toute en puissance et en agressivité conserve sa ligne directrice tout en jouant sur les variations de style. Ecrit, enregistré et produit par Dave Wyndorf, Powertrip ne ment pas sur la marchandise, c'est un trip bien puissant dans l'univers haut en couleur d'un groupe qui a choisi de se renouveler d'une manière totale mais sans renier pour autant le chemin parcouru. Certes Powertrip ouvre d'autres portes que celles enfoncées par Spine of God, Superjudge et Dopes to Infinity, mais l'ambiance repose toujours sur des ambiances fuzzées, de la super bonne guitare qui envoie des soli de killer, des riff bien inspirés. L'album fait plus de place aux mélodies et aux morceaux rentre dedans qui ont le mérite de se graver profondément dans le cortex.
Powertrip peut-être un bon point d'entrée dans la musique du monstre magnétique mais il a tendance à occulter que le groupe joue sur deux tableaux. D'un côté un Stoner oldschool très envapé et psychédélique, contemplatif et planant. De l'autre un Heavy Rock énervé et punchy. Les premiers albums ont jeté les bases de ces deux styles qui se croisent ensuite avec des dosages plus ou moins forts sur les projets suivants. MONSTER MAGNET c'est ça.
