STONED JESUS est un groupe ukrainien qui n'a pas les deux pieds dans le même sabot. Ce power trio fondé en 2009 est composé du leader, chanteur, guitariste et seul membre originel, Igor Sydorenko, de Sergii Sliusar à la basse (arrivé en 2011) et de Viktor Kondratov à la batterie (arrivé en 2013). The Harvest est le troisième méfait du gang est il n'a pas grand chose à voir avec les deux précédents. Car si on parle aujourd'hui de vrai gros Stoner groovy, les premiers projets First Common (2010) et Seven Thunder Roar (2012) s'inscrivaient plutôt dans un courant Doom atmosphérique et psychédélique à tendance shamanique. Ces deux premiers albums délivraient une musique contemplative et envoûtante, une expérience à part entière, avec une vraie personnalité, quelque chose qui sortait STONED JESUS du peloton très encombré des groupes Doom. Avec les ukrainiens, l'expérience était toute autre...
"Igor Sydorenko se met à chanter, presque à psalmodier ; derrière, on sent sa guitare se livrer à des rituels païens au gré des riffs. La batterie de Viktor Kondratov, elle, a plus un rôle de rupture que de fondation rythmique. Elle est là pour nous rappeler que dans ce monde aux contours flous et hésitants, psychédélique, aucune forme n'est appelée à s'éterniser.
C'est la basse, rageuse, qui soutient tout ce fragile équilibre. Sergii Sliusar a pour mission délicate de donner toute la profondeur au dessin que ses deux acolytes peignent. Un peu comme si il devait donner une troisième dimension à une fresque amérindienne. Et putain, il y arrive. La basse, dans STONED JESUS, c'est un peu le lien entre leur univers et le nôtre. Un peu comme le vieux conteur au coin du feu, qui tire la légitimité de ses histoires de sa longue barbe et de sa voix profonde."
Avant, STONED JESUS c'était ça.
Mais The Harvest rebat les cartes pour proposer quelque chose de plus protéiforme, comme une mue. Sans renier ses racines, le STONED JESUS nouveau est plus punchy, mais aussi plus classique. En tout cas, à première vue, c'est moins original. Comme pour les précédents projets, The Harvest propose essentiellement des pistes longues, voire très longues. Musicalement parlant, c'est assez éclectique. On est ballottés entre Heavy Rock sur "Here Come The Robots" (avec une sonorité qui rappelle RED FANG) et "Silkworn Confessions", Stoner très sabbathien sur "Ritual of the Sun", Stoner punchy sur "YFS" et en final un énorme morceau Doom Progressif qui multiplie les ambiances et les sensations, "Black Church" et ses 14:45 minutes de pure extase. Cette dernière piste ressemble un peu à un regard en arrière, vers les deux précédents méfaits, comme une passerelle entre les différents univers. La prod est parfaite, sous des abords de grande simplicité, le groupe continue à proposer un son original, quelque chose qui oscille entre RED FANG sur "Here come the Robots", BLACK SABBATH (le riff de "Ritual of the Sun").
Les ukrainiens ne renoncent pas à leur sonorité originelle, ils y apportent juste une touche supplémentaire. Seul l'avenir dira si The Harvest est un album de rupture, un interlude ou le développement de nouvelles sonorités qui viendront s'ajouter à la palette déjà chargée du trio. Le gang aurait pu se contenter d'un troisième projet dans la veine des précédents, il ose une sortie et propose quelques titres qui vont mettre le feu aux planches.
