Le problème lorsqu’un guitariste sort un album solo, c’est qu’il veut montrer à tout le monde combien il joue bien. John 5 n’échappe pas à la règle. Mais l’on peut comprendre qu’après le nombre d’années de travail qu’il a dû accumuler pour parvenir à un tel résultat il ait envie d’en faire profiter les autres.
Notre homme est difficile à cerner, son CV faisant tout de même figurer Rob Halford, David Lee Roth et Marylin Manson ! Ce n’est pas cet album qui va nous aider à définir sa personnalité puisqu’il prend un malin plaisir à partir dans toutes les directions, à explorer chaque style et surtout chaque case de sa guitare. C’est aussi ce qui rend cet album assez difficile d’accès. Il se réservera donc principalement aux fans de Monsieur 5 et aux connaisseurs de bonne guitare qui pourront alors apprécier à leur juste valeur les gammes qui s’envolent littéralement, le picking, le tapping et tout le toutim.
Pour le reste, il est préférable de savoir que vous allez avoir droit à de la country (5 morceaux tout de même), de l’indus et, quand même un peu de Hard Rock. Sur ce point, les titres “Zugg Island Convict”, “Flatlines, Thin Lines”, “Needless CA” et “Pulling Strings” valent le détour. Le tout est assez barré et pourrait s’apparenter par certains aspects à Ron Thal ou à FREAK GUITAR.
