On croyait avoir définitivement perdu THUNDER après leur (dernier) split en 2009. Le groupe de Hard Rock anglais annonçait en effet que le coeur n'y était plus, notamment parce que certains musicos souhaitaient s'investir plus dans leur side project. A part une ultime reformation le temps d'un show au High Voltage Festival de juillet 2011 où ils partageaient l'affiche avec DREAM THEATER et BLACK COUNTY COMMUNIION, on était sans nouvelles du gang fondé en 1989 par le vocaliste Dany Bowes, le guitariste Luke Morley et le batteur Gary James. Pendant leurs vingt ans de carrière, les cinq anglais nous ont régalé d'un Hard Rock mâtiné de Blues. Un son classique et reconnaissable, peut-être un petit peu trop répétitif sur certains albums mais en tout cas très efficace.
C'est pourquoi les fans ont été ravis d'apprendre courant 2014 la reformation de THUNDER pour (au moins) un album et une tournée. C'est le line-up historique qui rempile. On y retrouve les trois membres fondateurs accompagnés depuis 1996 par Ben Matthews (guitare, clavier) et Chris Childs (basse). Si le groupe n'a jamais vraiment percé en France, cette nouvelle sortie est une bonne occasion de découvrir (ou redécouvrir) leur musique.
L'album de la réunion, Wonder Days, est un skeud d'un classicisme obsessionnel : photo de couv, titre, musique, lyrics, style général, tout transpire la nostalgie des good old days (du Hard Rock de papa)...
Techniquement, rien à dire, les cinq zikos en ont sous le capot et cette interruption de six ans n'a pas émoussé leur savoir faire : l'alchimie fonctionne toujours aussi bien. La tracklist est bien pensée, multipliant les ambiances et les variations de tempo : Hard Rock sur "Wonder Days", "Black Water" ou "The Prophet", plus Rock'n Roll sur "The Thing I want" ou "I Love the weekends", acoustique sur "The Rain", bluesy sur "Serpentine" ou enfin belle ballade au piano sur "Broken". Tout au long des 11 pistes de l'album, l'ambiance ne retombe pas, on ne déplore aucun morceaux de remplissage, mais aucun hymne non plus, ce qui n'est pas bien grave car le reste de la discographie du groupe compte déjà suffisamment de bons morceaux pour enflammer le public en concert !
Là où le bat blesse, c'est sur la créativité.
Les morceaux de la galette ont un petit air de déjà entendu, chez TUNDER et ailleurs. Le gang était-il tellement en manque d'inspiration qu'il soit allé la chercher chez les autres ? Ainsi "The Prophet" duplique purement et simplement le riff du "Barracuda" de HEART et la mélodie de "Chasing Shadow" ressemble comme une soeur jumelle à celle de "El diablo Rojo" des TEXAS HIPPIE COALITION ! D'autres reprises plus subtiles jalonnent la tracklist et sans crier au plagiat, on peut dire que Wonder Days a une forte capacité évocatrice... peut-être est-ce à dessein ? C'est en tout cas le talon d'Achille du CD. En effet, même si la réalisation est excellente, elle n'a pas une saveur suffisante pour devenir mémorable. Et on ne peut qu'être déçu qu'un album de réunion ne livre pas plus d'inédit.
Pour conclure, Wonder Days est accrocheur, on constate avec plaisir que THUNDER sait toujours y faire pour installer de belles ambiances. Mais il manque à l'opus une personnalité plus affirmée. Le groupe ne prend pas de risque en sortant un disque tellement convenu et classique qu'on croirait entendre un album de reprises !
