En faisant l'état des lieux du Hardcore moderne, on constate à quel point les diverses scènes mondiales sont plus vives et actives que jamais. Situation diplomatique, politique et économique oblige ?
Une preuve nous en est encore donnée aujourd'hui, avec la sortie de ce premier album d'OBLIVIONATION, groupe qui nous vient de Lowell, Massachusetts. Leur démo en 2013 avait explosé les oreilles de tous les fans de Punk Hardcore locaux, et le message commence à se répandre comme une traînée de poudre dans le monde entier.
Selon les avis éclairés, il pourrait même s'agir du meilleur EP estampillé Hardcore de l'année 2014, rien de moins !
Alors, après écoute, je dois reconnaître une chose. Si Language Of Violence représente l'archétype du Hardcore moderne à tendance Punk, je veux bien signer pour quelques décennies d'écoute supplémentaires !
Constitué d'anciens membres de groupes du cru visiblement connus (mais les infos sont dures à décrocher !), OBLIVIONATION fait montre d'une énergie incroyable, au point de faire tremper par moments leur Hardcore dans les eaux bouillantes du Thrash. Non par les structures de leurs morceaux, qui respectent à la lettre la déontologie du style, mais par cette folie urgente contaminante qui transforme leur EP en baril de nitroglycérine. Du morceau éponyme d'ouverture au final "How Far Is "Gone"?", aucun temps mort, aucune pause, aucune barrière pour reprendre son souffle, les dix titres foncent bille en tête sans se poser de questions. Bâties sur des riffs éprouvés mais efficaces, les compositions cavalent sans temps mort, même si parfois le groupe se permet quelques respirations plus Heavy ("Not Pro Union, Just Pro You"), le temps pour la rythmique de se poser quelques secondes avant de reprendre son galop. De fait, saluons le travail remarquable de John Evicci (Out Cold) qui malmène son kit avec hargne et puissance en parfaite adéquation avec la guitare qui tronçonne un paquet de lignes saccadées ou déliées.
Le moule est solide, est sert la totalité de l'album. Pourquoi changer une recette qui fonctionne? Surtout lorsque celle ci repose en partie sur un chant vraiment vindicatif, dans la plus grande tradition des screamers du genre. Paroles investies, centrées sur les problèmes sociaux, musique qui impose sa violence sans ambages, production ad hoc qui catapulte des guitares tranchantes sur une batterie affolante, tout est là indéniablement pour offrir au Punk Hadrcore ses lettres de noblesses pour un siècle en cours. Sur la seconde partie du EP, OBLIVIONATION se permet même quelques libertés bienvenues ("Fear Breeds Action" et son intro Rock N'Roll pur jus, solo compris, "Salting The Earth", encore plus débridée que le reste du vinyle, avec en avant plan un John Evicci qui se refuse toute limite), accélère encore plus le tempo ("No Sigalong", le "Necrophobic" d'OBLIVIONATION ?), avant de terminer le job comme ils l'avaient commencé, à fond la caisse, et en lâchant presque par hasard un solo très Métal dans l'exécution.
Etouffés dans une époque qui ne laisse que peu de place à l'empathie, certains n'oublient pas l'héritage laissé par le Punk et le Hardcore des années 80, et continuent de le faire vivre, avec une farouche volonté de changer les choses. Et si chaque discours de révolte avait la puissance et l'énergie de ce Language Of Violence, gageons que bon nombre d'oreilles se tendraient pour en assimiler les propos.
Le meilleur EP de 2014 ? C'est possible, mais qui s'en préoccupe ? Ecoutez Language Of Violence pour ce qu'il est, non pour ce qu'il pourrait être. A savoir un putain d'album de Punk Hardcore gorgé de testostérone et de slogans percutants. Et c'est déjà pas mal.
