La Suède assure chaque année sa livraison de petites bombes Heavy Metal, et 2014 n'échappera pas à la règle. CIVIL WAR annonce la fin de la trêve pour quatre anciens membres de SABATON (Daniel Mullback, Rikard Sundén, Daniel Mÿhr et Oskar Montelius) réformés en 2013. Le line-up complété par Patrick Johansson qui est la voix d'ASTRAL DOORS ou LION'S SHARE, deux groupes qui ont fait leur trou en Suède et en Europe au début des années 2000 grâce entre autres à la voix originale de leur grand frontman.
Ecrit sous la pression d'un contrat vite signé chez Napalm Records, The Killer Angels recueille 10 titres qui ont incontestablement la fraîcheur des débuts, mais avec le potentiel pour durer. Le thème de la guerre cher à SABATON est conservé mais avec plus de liberté quant aux sujets traités. On passe du conflit nord-irlandais à une apologie de Napoléon sans ciller, le tout en variant les tempos et la température de l'album à l'envi, sans traîner ni bâcler. Si on retrouve au coeur des rythmiques et dans les nappes de claviers la touche de la troupe de Joakim Brodén, force est de constater que CIVIL WAR a développé un son propre, puissant, juste et efficace. La vraie plus-value vient de son chanteur, qui étale sa voix caverneuse extrêmement mélodique sur des compos souvent brillantes, et impose sa classe et son expérience tout du long. On s'attardera sur les excellents mid-tempos "King of the Sun" ou "I Will Rule The Universe", les hymnes speed imparables que sont "First to Fight" ou "My Own Worst Ennemy" et surtout le presque dansant "Rome is Falling", dont le refrain ultra accrocheur est répété jusqu'à plus soif sur un son de clavier très moderne, en rupture avec les paroles.
Certains titres s'avèrent parfois plus quelconques (les occasionnels "fillers" tels "Sons of Avalon" ou "Gettysburg"), et on note les maladresses inhérentes aux premiers essais, comme ces choeurs indignes sur la fin de "Brother Judas", mais l'énergie et la maîtrise des mélodies vaut vraiment un franc détour vers ce nouveau point chaud sur la carte un peu usée du Heavy Metal.
