"Originaire de Lorraine et d'Alsace, DEFICIENCY voit le jour blablabla...". Bon, tout de suite, mettons les choses au point. Soit tu es lorrain, soit tu es alsacien. Pas les deux. En l'occurrence, ces garçons, charmants au demeurant, siègent à Forbach, Moselle, Lorraine. Ce qui me fait, en tant que strasbourgeois pur souche, les aimer un peu moins. Je pensais d'ailleurs qu'on ne pourrait pas faire pire que leur premier album, State Of Disillusion, sorti en 2011... C'était mal connaître le Lorrain, dont la connaissance en art se limite vraisemblablement à Andy Warhol, Pedro Almodovar et Michel Houellebecq. L'essence même de ce second opus, le répugnant The Prodigal Child est donc ainsi résumé. Plus détestable encore que ce Thrash Metal mélodique ? Ce Thrash Metal mélodique conceptuel. Ode poussive et lapidaire à l'introspection, aux questions existentielles sur le "devenir de l'humanité", voilà un disque qui sort avec quatre mois de retard. Qui suis-je ? Où vais-je ? Les épreuves de philo au bac 2013, c'est terminé depuis un moment les mecs ! Mais puisqu'il faut faire le boulot jusqu'au bout, passons à la purge dès à présent...
Les dents claquent, les genoux s'entrechoquent mais finalement, DEFICIENCY peut respirer. Tout ceci n'était qu'une piètre mise en scène, à peine crédible. Car la vérité est inextinguible, qu'elle va bien au-delà d'une pseudo querelle régionale identitaire. A l'échelle nationale, ce quatuor est surement ce qui se fait de plus prometteur et doué. Et The Prodigal Child en est une manifestation très professionnelle. On passera sur le boulot de David Potvin du Dome Studio, irréprochable, comme toujours, pour se concentrer sur la moelle osseuse de cet album, pas forcément très imaginatif, mais fourmillant de générosité et d'une technique qui te pète au visage dès les premières secondes de l'éponyme. L'efficacité crasse d'un SOILWORK se répand telle sur trainée de poudre sur les premiers accords, accrochant l'oreille du fan de Metal vaguement mélodique, vaguement moderne. Cependant, il faudra attendre de découvrir la silhouette tubesque d'"Unfinished" pour se convaincre durablement des bonnes intentions qui vont garnir The Prodigal Child. Progressivement, DEFICIENCY affine sa personnalité, rentre dans un univers moucheté de biomécanique, de prospection, de futurisme qui lui autorise diverses inspirations un peu fantaisistes. Ces thèmes éculés qui font de certains albums de FEAR FACTORY, MASTODON, TRIVIUM des scénars sci-fi formatés, les Lorrains se les approprient et, à l'image d'une formation comme HORD, parvient à joindre l'utile à l'agréable. L'agréable, c'est cette musicalité qui guide l'œuvre dans des retranchements inattendus, comme sur l'inénarrable instrumentale "A Way Out Of Nowhere". C'est aussi cette technicité velue et pompeuse, qui en viendrait presque à rebuter si elle n'était pas distillée avec tant de culot. Une effronterie qui en ferait presque oublier la longueur démesurée de ce full-lenght. 62 minutes de vitesse, d'harmonies, de grosses voix, de concept. C'est intense, probablement trop pour être ingéré du premier coup. Mais au moins, on en a pour notre argent.
On n'ira pas jusqu'à dire que DEFICIENCY est au Metal tricolore ce que Christophe Colomb est au monde des explorateurs, mais il y a de cette spontanéité, de cette soif de découvertes et d'aventures qui fait de The Prodigal Child un disque attachant, trop bien foutu pour être ignoré même s'il se moule sans heurts dans le décor. On n'attend maintenant d'eux qu'ils explosent au niveau national, car leur plus grande qualité demeure le fait d'être français, tandis que leur plus gros défaut demeure le fait d'être lorrains. On ne peut pas être parfait.
