J'aurais voulu commencer cette chronique en évoquant la pochette de cet album, en vous disant qu'elle est une insulte à ce que l'œil peut voir de plus gracieux, en affirmant qu'un bleu si flashy est d'une incompatibilité inégalée avec un disque de Black Metal et que pour un groupe marseillais, ça mérite bien une petite rafale de kalach'. Mais j'oubliais que cette introduction est déjà réservée pour un autre papier, un autre CD à l'artwork autrement plus dégueulasse. Alors je me contenterai du minimum syndical. UNHEALTHY DREAMS, groupe français originaire de la région PACA, plutôt actif entre sa création en 1998 et ce premier full-lenght en 2003, tombé dans le silence (presque) le plus total depuis. Seul un EP (Doloris Corpus en 2007) à se mettre sous la dent en une décennie et encore, sous une forme un peu différente, beaucoup moins corpse-paintée, voilà ce qu'il faut retenir de leur parcours si l'on veut aller au-delà de ce modeste Nightmares Give Way To Apocalypse.
Pourtant, c'est surement très con, mais je me dis qu'à l'aube du dixième anniversaire de cette œuvre, UNHEALTHY avait peut-être une carte à jouer. Car il faut surtout reconnaître qu'avec ce premier album (pochette mise à part), les Marseillais avaient fait les choses bien. Très vite, un flot de Black Metal malsain et grandiloquent se déverse sur l'auditeur au rythme des riffs crados d'"Unhealthy... Dreams" et d' "Among The Stars". C'est un curieux mélange de WINDIR et de BISHOP OF HEXEN qui est suggéré, non sans rappeler également un certain Mustis (ex-DIMMU BORGIR) pour les pianos ensorcelés. Combinant généreusement Black Metal râpeux et orchestrations kitscho-pompeuses, UNHEALTHY DREAMS avait néanmoins le don de ne pas trop tomber dans la surenchère. Mieux encore, une composition équilibrée comme "My Last Temptation" symbolisait les quelques fulgurances géniales que pouvaient ressentir ce combo. Bien évidement, on est obligé de parler de cet opus au passé, car il a terriblement mal vieilli et que son côté "buvard", absorbant les nombreuses coulées de sang et d'encre, n'aidait pas. Mais replacé dans son contexte, il dégage toujours une certaine cohésion, une ambiance macabre qu'on remarque encore dix ans après ! Une sorte de gêne théâtrale se greffe en lui quand les arrangements de l'illustre inconnu non-crédité qui tenait les claviers viennent rompre la furie symbolique de "Vatican Armaggedon". C'est peut-être d'ailleurs à ce niveau que pêche principalement le groupe. Avec une musique profondément onirique, on aurait bien aimé une autre littérature qu'un ramassis de clichés blasphématoires et antichrétiens. MARDUK et son "Fuck Me Jesus !", c'est culte mais UNHEALTHY DREAMS et son "Marie I kiss you cunt", c'est pas franchement swag. Reste que le chant n'est pas des plus articulé, ce qui limite la casse.
Il faudrait être sérieusement burné pour miser le moindre centime sur un éventuel retour d'UNHEALTHY DREAMS dans un futur proche. Ceci étant, Nightmares Give Way To Apocalypse mériterait bien un successeur. Hypnotique, proprement exécuté, relativement sincère. Ce groupe a su ouvrir une brèche sans s'y engouffrer et je suis sûr que leurs talents de fins compositeurs doivent secrètement bouillir en fond d'eux depuis tout ce temps. Il ne tient qu'à eux d'enfin commencer à forer ce qui ressemble vaguement à un gisement d'or noir.
