Après une absence de deux ans due à une méchante blessure au bras, « Megadave » est de retour en 2004 avec ce dixième album studio, flanqué de deux nouveaux acolytes : Jimmie Lee Sloas (basse) et Vinnie Colaiuta (batterie), ainsi que du guitariste Chris Poland (qui avait déjà sévi sur les trois premiers albums du groupe). Après trois albums en demi-teinte (« Cryptic writings », « Risk » et « The world needs a hero ») assez mal reçus par les fans, ce nouvel album était un peu attendu comme l’album de la résurrection et un retour à des racines plus Thrash.
Dès la première écoute c’est un réel bonheur que de découvrir de nouveaux riffs et soli de haute volée de la trempe de ceux qui firent de Megadeth une des plus grandes références dans le domaine du Metal. Cependant ne nous méprenons pas, « The system has failed » n’est pas le « Rust in peace 2 » auquel certains s’attendaient, mais plutôt un coktail de petits brûlots Thrash tels que « Blackmail the universe », « Kick the chair » ou encore « Back in the day », et de morceaux plus lents, accrocheurs et mélodiques : « Die dead enough », « The scorpion », « Tears in a vial « , etc. plutôt inspirés par la période « Youthanasia ». Comme on pouvait s’en douter en voyant la pochette, les paroles des chansons sont très satiriques à propos du gouvernement (« Blackmail the universe ») ou de la justice (« Kick the chair ») ; « Something I’m not » évoque également les différends qui ont récemment opposé Dave à son ancien groupe Metallica , et « Back in the day » est un véritable hymne au Metal.
J’ai beaucoup accroché aux morceaux jusqu’à « Back in the day », que je considère en quelque sorte comme le point culminant de l’album, mais à partir de ce titre je trouve que l’album s’essouffle un peu, notamment sur le dernier morceau « My kingdom », qui laisse malheureusement un goût un peu amer dans la bouche. De plus les nouveaux titres, même si certains d’entre eux sont très bons et que la voix de Dave est meilleure que sur les albums précédents, ne proposent rien de nouveau par rapport à ce que le groupe a pu faire par le passé. Cependant, même si « The sytem has failed » n’est pas convaincant de bout en bout, il reste un très bon album qui réconciliera sûrement les fans avec le groupe et prouve que Megadeth is « still alive…and well » !
