NEFAS, ce sont deux univers qui entrent en collision. Voilà maintenant onze ans que l'impact s'est produit, mais sa puissance fracassante laissera à jamais un cratère, comme une plaie béante sur le visage de la Terre. D'un côté, il y a cette majestueuse scène suédoise et ses disciples du passé et du présent, mais surement pas du futur. Dans ce cas précis, GRAVE en chef de gare puis DISMEMBER, ENTOMBED, UNLEASHED et les seconds couteaux. De l'autre, il y a tout l'univers graphique, thématique et spirituel de groupes comme MELECHESH ou NILE. Ici, les Italiens de NEFAS sont particulièrement sensibles à la démonologie sumérienne ainsi qu'aux mythes babyloniens. Un concept forcément lointain et incompréhensible pour ceux qui ne baignent pas dedans. Qui sont ces dieux aux noms imprononçables ? Ces divinités affublées de sobriquets grotesques ? Seven Times Seven aurait pu être un élément de réponse, s'il eut été un tant soit peu magnétique.
Je peux hélas vous garantir qu'on n'a pas du tout envie de s'y replonger illico presto une fois l'expérience achevée. Car ce premier et unique album des Transalpins est une masse granuleuse, impénétrable, sourde. Ce n'est nullement un livre qui déborde d'une aura de connaissances et de savoir, laquelle nous contraint à une lecture frénétique et avide. Au contraire, le Death Metal typé old-school du trio refrénera instinctivement tout besoin d'approfondissement. Je citais NILE plus haut, car les Américains (qui ont toujours écrit leurs meilleurs albums sous la forme d'un trio...) sont la matérialisation la plus complète de l'équilibre le plus complet entre musique et concept. Chez NEFAS, l'un prend le dessus sur l'autre, l'éclipse, le maltraite, au point que le booklet ressemble davantage à un grimoire bourré de hiéroglyphes qu'à un éclaircissement. Parlons alors musique, puisque c'est ce qui pousse Seven Times Seven à la faute. Ca n'échappera à personne, la production est d'une moiteur vraiment dérangeante. Ce mélange d'amateurisme et d'intentions propulse le trio au cœur des années 90, quand un disque comme Into The Grave avait la silhouette d'un oracle. On ne pourra dès lors que mieux comprendre leur histoire, ainsi que la finalité de cette sortie tardive, puisque NEFAS s'est formé en 1995, une époque bénite pour le style. Complètement bloqués, pétrifiés et tétanisés dans leur petit univers bruyant et minimaliste, les Italiens vont faire parler la poudre en laissant de côté le plus petit artifice. Authentique et sincère, cet opus est totalement imperméable, ce qui est aussi son plus gros défaut. Tous les éléments traditionnels, du riff casse-cou aux voix gutturales en passant par les leads et le blast bête et méchant sont là. Mais leur agencement dérange. Il s'agit en fait d'un empilement vulgaire et bancal lorgnant parfois sur le Grind ("In The Name Of Seven") qui ne présente que peu d'intérêt.
Excessivement confus et symptomatique du groupe qui a de l'envie mais qui éjacule avec précocité, Seven Times Seven est une sortie bien triste que le temps n'aura pas aidé à anoblir. Les fans de GRAVE, de GORGUTS ou d'old-school poussiéreux et irréfléchi y prendront un plaisir assez détestable. Quant aux autres, l'absence de cohérence entre les paroles, l'image et la musique, la simplicité effrayante de ce Death ou le chaos grossier qu'il véhicule auront raison de toute écoute approfondie.
