Bonjour IDENSITY. Je suis le docteur Faust. Votre second album, Chronicles, m'a rappelé ma propre histoire, c'est pourquoi je vous contacte aujourd'hui. J'étais au bord du suicide, loin de cette connaissance universelle que j'enviais tant, quand Méphistophélès en personne m'a proposé ses services. A en juger par votre œuvre, il semblerait que comme l'affirme une maxime populaire, Il se cache dans les détails. Un violon, un arrangement, une vocalise, n'importe quoi. Prenez garde, car Il a damné mon âme le jour où j'ai quitté ce monde. Ses arguments seront persuasifs et ses talents de tribun, magnétiques. Ne vous laissez pas ensorceler, à moins qu'il ne soit déjà trop tard. Amitiés.
Cette lettre ouverte, je crois que je l'ai rêvée à la seconde où démarre Chronicles. J'ai un vague souvenir de ce groupe francilien, principalement pour avoir chroniqué leur premier effort, Serenity, paru en septembre 2011. Et c'est peu dire que s'il avait été de cet acabit, je m'en serais souvenu avec davantage de précision. Car à l'heure où éclot un MELTED SPACE, où SEPTICFLESH semble au sommet de son Art, où OPETH brille de sa régularité, pareille sortie ne passerait pas inaperçue. Ce sont ces aspérités tragiques, morcelées, théâtrales et orchestrées qui feront de Chronicles ce grand album de Death sympho-progressif tricolore que tant de monde attendait. Bercé par une mythologie mélancolique et des arrangements surréalistes qui pataugent dans l'esprit B.O, le Death Metal d'IDENSITY n'en sera jamais vraiment. Il semblerait que la rêverie qui enveloppe un "Mofa" ou plus précisément, l'utilisation chronique de ce violon sert de plus en plus la cause de ce groupe, lequel parvient à extraire du panier d'astucieuses combinaisons entre riffs parpaings et intonations baroques, parfois exotiques. Je pense qu'il faut voir en Chronicles une sorte de grand livre poussiéreux visant à narrer en des textes épiques des épopées qui le sont tout autant. L'enchevêtrement des voix, la diversité rythmique, le jeu de textures, d'ambiances, le degré de progressisme qui atteint ce Death Metal, tout évoque une pièce de théâtre qui ferait intervenir différentes entités, certaines diaboliques ("Annunaki"), d'autres mieux intentionnées ("Mantra", quel titre !). Et au milieu de tout ça, il y a un groupe qui vit et qui a progressé. IDENSITY marque d'une empreinte nouvelle son second opus, s'orientant davantage vers la chaude nébulosité de SEPTICFLESH que vers la froideur de KATATONIA. En d'autres termes, le sextet a peaufiné un maximum de détails pour rendre une copie ciselée dans un marbre précieux. Ce n'est pas le plus technique des Death progressifs, mais c'est suffisamment bien arrangé et écrit pour nous le faire oublier. Quelque part, quand il y a rêverie, c'est forcément un pari gagné pour ce genre de disque.
Est-ce le changement de line-up qui est à l'origine de cet effort colossal ? Est-ce la sortie récente de nombreux blockbusters qui engendre ce besoin de Metal cinématographié ? Est-ce les voyages qui ont forgé ce Metal ? IDENSITY le sait mieux que quiconque et sans nous en dévoiler davantage, nous conviera à un étonnant périple. Chronicles, où une hypnose à contre-temps, peut-être à contre-courant, mais certainement pas contre-nature, puisqu'elle sera à la source de notre subconscient. Le même qui m'aura fait écrire ce premier paragraphe.
