THE FALLEN (FRA) - The Fallen (2013)

THE FALLEN, groupe franco australien de Rock mélodique a commencé à déployer ses ailes en 2009. Il prit son envol en 2012, lors du festival tremplin "Emergenza" pour nicher en des endroits mythiques tels que le Gibus, la Scène Bastille, l'Alhambra et se retrouver à la finale au Bataclan, prouvant ainsi que son plumage était à la hauteur de son ramage. Leur site vous propose de revenir sur la genèse de cette aventure et de la partager à travers des audio-live et vidéo de qualité. Et c'est encore la meilleure façon de faire connaissance avec les membres du combo, le duo Karim, bass guitar, l'homme au chapeau, Py, lead/rythm guitar, accompagnés de Melek, chanteuse, originaire de Perth en Australie, et de Julien, drums.
La conception graphique de la pochette reprend le thème de la créature ailée, motif assez couru dans le Metal, à l'image de Rebirth d'ANGRA, Angel de MORGANA, Worlds Apart de SILENT FORCE, et j'en passe...à noter que les graphistes ne doivent pas être insensibles au clair-obscur utilisé par Derek Gores pour la pochette de Silverthorn de KAMELOT. On retrouve là, le même côté sombre percé par quelques rais lumineux. Une lueur dans les ténèbres.
Avec la première piste, "Forbidden" on découvre une intro avec une rythmique bien rentre dedans sur laquelle s'invite la voix de Melek, avec un refrain que l'on a vite en tête.
Le chant clair de Melek est, pour moi une réminiscence de ce que Mariska Veres apportait dans les 70's, une voix chaude, légère.
Quant à PY, le guitariste, il met son ouvrage sur le métier comme un artisan méticuleux et cela s'entend. Tout est ciselé et maitrisé. Il a le profil d'un luthiste. Sur des pistes comme «Stalker" et "Gone", on devine chez lui une envie de se débrider, de par une attaque plus rageuse de ses cordes, mais il se retient, en total maîtrise. Dans un projet parallèle, on le retrouverait bien dans un rock plus couillu. Mais là n'est pas le propos de THE FALLEN.
Après cette entrée en matière, et sur le titre suivant, "The End", Melek s'approprie complètement le morceau avec un accompagnement minimaliste. Quelques notes de piano ajoutent à l'intimité de l'ambiance. La voix se module sur un mid-tempo qui nous berce, avec un solo guitare qui se veut plaintif, faisant de ce titre une véritable complainte.
"My Regreted" est dans le même registre, celui de l'émotion, avec un thème plus personnel, un texte plus poignant.
"Here We Go" nous entraîne sur une rythmique saccadée avec une interprétation plus enlevée.
L'EP se termine avec "Gone" qui témoigne d'un travail plus poussé sur les arrangements, rupture de rythme, plage d'expression mieux valorisée pour chacun des membres du combo, avec l'appui omniprésent de Karim à la basse.
A noter que l'ordre des morceaux, leur formatage, leur déclinaison rythmique permet de donner du relief à l'E.P., cette façon de procéder a le mérite de susciter notre curiosité, et notre intérêt.
En résumé, un scud sage, qui fait de THE FALLEN, un combo appliqué, bon élève des Studios septième Ciel. Mais à vouloir trop bien faire, on se crée des freins, on s'autocensure, on se prive de la spontanéité et de l'énergie qui font la force du groupe sur scène, et l'accroche sur le net via les vidéos, audio live.
