En découvrant la pochette du premier EP éponyme d'OKLAHOMA SWAMP MONSTER, j'ai eu un rire nerveux. D'un côté t'as le Nosferatu quasi-centenaire de Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau, de l'autre t'as l'homme-robot du Père Noël contre les martiens (1964), les deux réunis sous une citation du Night Of The Living Dead de 1968. Il ne manque que le Comte Zaroff pour arriver au niveau ultime sur l'échelle du kitsch. A Marcoussis, le Clairefontaine du rugby, il y a un potentiel musculaire important, d'autant plus important qu'OKLAHOMA SWAMP MONSTER, avec son Stoner couillu (ce qui peut toujours servir pour l'un ou l'autre calendrier), a fortifié son entrejeu (pour ne pas dire entrejambe) avec cet EP fraichement débarqué. Et si le vocabulaire testiculaire est de sortie, c'est clairement parce qu'à la surprise générale, les Essonniens ont posé leurs couilles sur table de façon classieuse et élégante, à un moment où personne ne s'attendait vraiment à une telle surprise.
Quelque part entre BLACK SABBATH, NASHVILLE PUSSY et KYUSS, on retrouve un peu de l'âme de ce trio tricolore. L'EP éponyme démarre avec la chanson éponyme, ce qui doit vouloir dire que ce titre d'ouverture représente et résume l'identité musicale d'un EP qui lui-même représente et résume l'identité musicale du groupe. Vous suivez ? Peu importe, pour faire plus simple, tu tartines un Heavy Rock bien groovy et fat sur une tranche de Stoner pachydermique, le tout saupoudré de vocalises profondes et vibrantes qui font plus Southern que Billy Gibbons se faisant emmancher par Phil Anselmo sur "Sweet Home Alabama". Et au fil des minutes, la surprise n'en est que grandissante. L'énergique "One Man Riot" s'achève dans la tourbe et la fumée, avec de lancinants don't fade away qui t'obsèderont encore longtemps. Ein, zwei, drei, vier, si "Poppin Pills On The Time Machine" n'est pas une véritable œillade à RAMMSTEIN, elle est au moins un hommage vibrant au Metal teuton, à ses tempos chiadés, militaires et martiaux. Le superbe solo qui se ramène au bout de deux minutes sème le doute. Ce truc de tafiole, c'est bon pour SCORPIONS, pas pour RAMMSTEIN. Alors on doute et on continue de douter parce que "Whyskey Drinkin' Women" (qui n'est pas, je le précise, une reprise de NAZARETH) vient enfoncer le clou (Nazareth, Jésus, clou, vous comprenez ?). Fort d'ondes psychédéliques, ce morceau dilapide toute sensation de malaise et à ce moment précis, vient m'évoquer avec ses gros sabots MORE THAN MONKEYZ, un groupe niçois de Heavy Rock à peine plus connu qu'OKLAHOMA SWAMP MONSTER. Ces deux là feraient un carton ensemble en concert et pour le coup, je traverserais la France entière pour pouvoir entendre ça de mes propres oreilles. Car dans l'un comme dans l'autre, il y a le feeling authentique du Rock, le groove, l'impact et une putain de vista qui fait guili-guili dans le ventre.
S'il y a bien une chose que je n'aime pas faire, c'est de m'adresser aux labels en pleine chronique. Mais là, pour le coup, l'idée qu'un groupe de ce potentiel ne puisse jamais se développer, ne puisse jamais convenablement se distribuer et toucher plus de monde me fait un peu chier. Alors bravo à OKLAHOMA SWAMP MONSTER pour ce premier EP aux mérites largement vantés ci-dessus et à ces messieurs qui gèrent l'avenir de formations comme celles-ci, bougez votre couenne et creusez, vous avez du pétrole juste sous les pieds.
