Il y a eu récemment THE LOVECRAVE. Il y a maintenant ALIGHT. Et ce qui est sûr, c'est que le Gothic Metal italien underground n'a pas trouvé son meilleur avocat en rencontrant mon chemin. A part le Heavy Metal progressif, je ne vois pas d'autre style qui me soit plus étranger que le Gothic Metal. Bien sûr, j'ai eu ma période LACUNA COIL et finalement, je suis plutôt rassuré de constater que ce quatuor transalpin est plus ou moins copain avec des ELUVEITIE, DEATHSTARS, GRAVEWORM, KATAKLYSM ou CRADLE OF FILTH. Ça me fait soudainement moins peur quand au verdict qui attend Don't Fear The Revenge, un premier full-lenght qui succède en 2009 à une démo éponyme sortie en 2006. Tout le reste est plutôt inquiétant. Par exemple, comment expliquer ce silence qui dure désormais depuis quatre ans ? S'il y avait une vraie promesse dans ce disque, n'aurait-elle pas du déjà être tenue ? Ou ALIGHT prépare t-il une mixture encore plus fade que cet album ? Aucune hypothèse n'est à écarter, surtout pas quand on sait que ces Italiens auront du mal à faire plus easy-listening.
Don't Fear The Revenge n'est donc pas excessivement mauvais. Non, c'est vrai. On ressent beaucoup d'implication dans le jeu des musiciens et d'application dans les vocaux de Sabina qui, par ailleurs, possède un chant pas très agressif mais diablement moderne et apaisant. On se souvient tous d'un groupe de Gothic Metal à chant féminin qu'on a écouté en serrant les dents et les fesses parce que la frontwoman se prenait pour une Castafiore de supermarché. Ici, c'est l'inverse. La voix de Sabina capte de par sa douceur dès les premiers instants (très inquiétants) de "Disarmed". Inquiétants parce qu'ils exploitent des nappes de claviers futuristes, inhumains, déstabilisants, un peu façon DEATHSTARS, sauf que les Suédois savent ou savaient rendre ce genre de décision crédible. Là, ALIGHT se contente de répéter assez bêtement il est vrai des formules apprises par cœur. Un riff, un motif électronique, un refrain tristounet et ça ou là un break atmosphérique. Le quatuor a l'air d'assumer son affiliation au Gothic Metal jusqu'à la moelle, sauf que le résultat entendu sur ce premier album est loin d'être percutant. Les compositions s'enchaînent facilement pour la simple et bonne raison que ce Metal est lui-même très facile. De ce fait, il n'y a rien de foncièrement désagréable dans cet opus, résolument tourné vers la poésie et le romantisme. C'est propre, c'est cristallin, c'est épuré, c'est techniquement simpliste et bourré d'arrangements artificiels. Et ces quelques qualités flinguent très vite la pertinence de ce disque qui s'écoute aussi sans provoquer de véritables émotions. On remarque à peine la présence de Nell de THEATRE OF TRAGEDY sur "Your Bride" ou l'accélération rythmique sur une "Black Rain" énergique mais gâchée par ces satanés claviers qui sont d'un pénible... C'est dire si Don't Fear The Revenge déroule sans véritablement accrocher l'auditeur. Pourtant, avec un peu de concentration, on perçoit des idées, on perçoit de la bonne volonté, mais tout ça est trop triste, trop attendu, trop lisse pour qu'on s'en souvienne une fois la demi-heure passée.
Les charmants minois de Sabina et de la bassiste Elena (prends ça, Karin Axelsson) ne suffisent pas à faire oublier une prestation très très décevante. ALIGHT s'est embarqué dans une aventure compliquée, avec légitimité et passion, mais sans réels efforts pour proposer un Gothic Metal qui n'ait pas déjà été entendu milles fois. J'espère au moins que leur absence du "devant" de la scène (ou peut-être de l'arrière dans leur cas) leur sert à faire passer cet amateurisme dommageable qui se voit comme le nez au milieu du visage de Rossi De Palma.
