Entre les DESTINITY, CULT OF OCCULT, SKOX et autres HARMORAGE, la scène Metal lyonnaise n’a rien à envier aux autres concentrations d’orchestres de chevelus de l’Hexagone. Et l’écoute du premier album des jeunes THE BLACK FLOWERS, sobrement intitulé Circus, ne fait que confirmer ce constat.
A l’écoute des 25 premières secondes d’« Heart Broken Angel », on se dit avoir affaire à un Groove Metal des plus efficaces, façon Fafara & Co. Un riff puissant, à la limite du Djent, appuyé par un jeu de batterie à première vue banal, mais repoussant les limites de l’efficacité, notamment dans son jeu de double-pédales. Et c’est lorsque arrive le duo de voix claires (et seulement claires, amateurs de growls et autres rugissements de sauvages, allez voir ailleurs !) de Romain et Hugo, respectivement bassiste et guitariste que l’identité limite Metalcore du groupe apparaît évidente. Alors oui, ce terme apparaît comme un blasphème et une insulte aux décibels métalliques pour beaucoup, je sais… Un peu d’ouverture d’esprit, que diable ! Est-ce que le refrain de l’excellent « Chain The Beast Down » aurait été si facilement entêtant et délicieusement mémorable s’il avait été hurlé ? Bien sûr que non ! Que du bonheur, j’vous dis…
Un grand travail sur la richesse de la composition est fait, les morceaux sont variés et très riches en subtilités et en arrangements de main d’orfèvre. Le thrashy « Rise From There » montre le côté le plus énervé de la formation, avec son riff de toute beauté… Et non, même le refrain à la AVENGED SEVENFOLD, voir BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE, ne vient pas gâcher la fête, bien au contraire. La fraîcheur des solos de qualité distillés sur un peu tout l’album accentue le côté presque naïf de cette œuvre … Enfin, soyons clair, c’est un disque de Metal ! Point barre. Si un seul reproche devait être émis, il porterait sur la tournure quasiment toujours identique que prennent les refrains… Dommage.
Les qualités principales de Circus sont donc bel et bien son originalité et son énergie. Les grosses guitares restent maîtresses, sans être assommantes. Une bien chouette surprise, qui deviendra sans doute un super bon moment en concert. A découvrir si vous aimez la technique et la fougue de la jeunesse, mais à ne pas mettre entre les mains de votre pote barbu qui porte son t-shirt MORBID ANGEL comme une seconde peau.
