« Habemus Papam !» bêlèrent en chœur les brebis massées sur la place Saint Pierre. En cette sombre année 2013 qui voit un nouvel imposteur s’emparer du Vatican, Papa Emeritus II, seul légitime souverain pontife, ne pouvait rester silencieux. Flanqué de ses fidèles goules, le revoici prêt à crucifier quiconque se mettrait en travers de sa route vers le Panthéon du Metal. Souhaitons-lui d’avoir prévu suffisamment de clous et autres couronnes d’épines, car après le succès-surprise de l’excellent Opus Eponymous, nombreux sont les mécréants qui l’attendent au tournant.
Plutôt que de les prendre à contre-pied, ce second album joue la sécurité en s’inscrivant dans la continuité du premier. Il se veut même sa suite immédiate : Infestissumam (qui signifie hostile en latin) étant le nom que le groupe attribue à l’Antéchrist dont Opus Eponymous annonçait la naissance. Le voici maintenant parmi nous. Et qu’est-ce que ça change ? Musicalement pas grand-chose. Le producteur Nick Raskulinecz (FOO FIGHTERS, DEFTONES, STONE SOUR…) a d’ailleurs été recruté avant tout pour sa capacité à respecter le son délibérément rétro que GHOST s’était forgé pour son premier effort. Un son de batterie un poil plus lourd, un orgue électronique au kitsch assumé un peu plus mis en avant et surtout la présence marquée de chants grégoriens pas très catholiques constituent ses seuls apports. On ne s’en plaindra pas, tant ce son analogique mais lisse et aéré sert à merveille cette musique composée par un BRIAN WILSON sataniste. De l’Easy-listening pour égorgeurs de poulets en somme. On ne reviendra pas sur la délicieuse perversité de ce mélange contre-nature, apte à générer d’énormes tubes dont les paroles sont le seul obstacle à une diffusion massive sur toutes les grandes radios. Intéressons-nous plutôt à ces fameux tubes : retrouvera-t-on sur Infestissumam l’équivalent de l’imparable « Ritual » et de l’inoubliable « Stand by him ? ». Pas vraiment, ou plutôt pas immédiatement. Passée une intro fort prometteuse c’est la déconvenue qui prévaut avec un « Per aspera ad Inferi » bien trop proche de « Con Clavi Con Dio » qui tenait la même place sur l’opus éponyme. Le mollasson et longuet « Secular haze » qui lui emboîte le pas est un bien mauvais choix de single qui donnera du grain à moudre à ceux qui prédisent au combo une chute aussi brutale que son ascension. « Jigolo har megiddo » renoue avec les mélodies faussement légères et ensoleillées qui ont fait le succès de GHOST mais sans totalement retrouver cette incroyable spontanéité des débuts. Dans l’ensemble, c’est précisément ce qui manque à ce nouvel album qui applique avec trop de systématisme les recettes du précédent. En contrepartie, il progresse sur les points qui faisaient défaut à son prédécesseur : plus long, sans instrumental inutile et doté d’une vraie intro, belle et travaillée, Infestissumam est un album nettement plus abouti qu’Opus Eponymous. Et même si l’effet de surprise ne joue plus en sa faveur, il nous réserve de très beaux moments, en particulier lorqu’il joue à fond la carte du kitsch et du rétro (« Guleh/Zombie Queen », « Body and blood », « Idolatrine » et le superbe final « Monstrance clock »). Ne lui manquent pour être parfait qu’un peu plus de pêche, en particulier dans son premier tiers et des tubes plus évidents.
La messe est dite : Satan et ses sbires en soutane ne sont pas près de lever le siège. Encore un album de cette trempe et le Vatican tombera !
