Corey Taylor est un mec très occupé. C'est d'ailleurs le propre des musiciens influents. On connaissait le masque en peau brûlée, couvert d'agrafes. On a appris à connaître son pendant beau-gosse qui exerce à visage découvert dans STONE SOUR. Vous serez peut-être étonné d'apprendre que ce projet a vu le jour en 1992, soit trois ans avant les grands débuts de SLIPKNOT. Accompagné du #4, l'imprévisible Jim Root, de Joel Ekman et de Shawn Economaki, le groupe voit sa progression devenir dépendante des premiers balbutiements de « l'autre » groupe de Des Moines. Malgré quelques démos, l'idée bat de l'aile et s'achève prématurément en 1997 avec un hiatus d'une durée indéterminée avant de redémarrer en trombe cinq ans plus tard grâce à un premier album éponyme et à l'arrivée du guitariste Josh Rand. Tout n'a donc pas été facile, mais force est de constater qu'une (voire deux) décennie plus loin, STONE SOUR est toujours un groupe qui fait l'actualité. A quelques jours de la sortie d'House Of Gold & Bones Part 2, je vous propose revenir sur un premier volet qui donne la réplique à un Audio Secrecy passé plutôt inaperçu.
Ce qu'il est essentiel de comprendre (et certains n'y parviennent toujours pas), c'est que STONE SOUR n'a jamais eu vocation à faire de la concurrence à SLIPKNOT. Pas plus qu'à faire preuve d'une quelconque complémentarité. Alors oui, avec deux membres qui jonglent entre ces deux entités, il était évident qu'à un moment où à un autre, les idées allaient se croiser. Ça arrive sur « My Name Is Allen » et aussi sur « RU486 » qui fait très Hardcore dans l'esprit avec ces chœurs scandés et ces guitares épileptiques. Mais c'est tellement épisodique que les trois quarts du temps, on se retrouve avec quelque chose de passionnant, avec des mélodies qui aguichent les oreilles, des parties vocales entêtantes (comme sur la tonitruante « A Rumor Of Skin »). Le quatuor parvient, après avoir vécu et écrit tant de choses, à composer des morceaux qui ne sont ni ennuyeux, ni répétitifs. Quoiqu'on en dise, il y a un vrai talent de compositeur en Corey Taylor et une vraie beauté dans sa voix, qu'il se fait une joie d'étaler sur la mélancolique « The Travelers, Pt. 1 » ou sur une « Taciturn » qui porte remarquablement bien son nom. Des influences Hard Rock, Stoner et Neo Metal viennent envelopper cet album qui rappelle par intermittences les plus belles heures d'un STAIND ou d'un NICKELBACK en plus couillu. Même pour moi qui n'a jamais été un grand adepte de la musique jusqu'alors aseptisée de cette formation, je reconnais de brillantes fulgurances et de réelles émotions qui se dégagent de titres précis, parfois arrangés (« Tired ») mais toujours sincères. STONE SOUR développe sur cet album une panoplie de mélodies et d'harmonies qui raviront à la fois les fans de Metal simpliste mais aussi ceux qui ont besoin d'un peu de musicalité pour exister. Tout en nuances de noir et d'argent, House Of Gold & Bones Part 1 s'affirme minute après minute comme une œuvre relativement easy-listening mais cohérente. C'est quelque chose d'assez nouveau pour moi, mais je ressens le besoin de savoir si la deuxième partie de ce livre fascinant sera à la hauteur des espoirs laissés par la première. Cette envie de me rassurer quant à la continuité que STONE SOUR donnera à son projet n'arrive que sur les albums dont la bonne volonté suffit à masquer deux ou trois imperfections. L'une d'entre elle intervient sur « Last Of The Real » qui conclut ce disque de façon très brutale.
Affirmer qu'à l'heure où j'écris ces lignes, House Of Gold & Bones Part 1 est le meilleur album de STONE SOUR me semble tout à fait inévitable. C'est celui qui fait preuve de maturité, d'aisance, de culot, de pureté à l'endroit exact où ses prédécesseurs naviguaient à vue. La machine étant désormais lancée plein gaz, on peut maintenant s'attendre à voir la couronne changer de tête. Réponse d'ici une poignée de jours.
