A l'heure actuelle, je pense qu'il n'est plus nécessaire de présenter cette légende qu'est devenu OPETH. Les Suédois s'éclatent toujours depuis 1994 avec Heritage qui est sorti plus récemment. Pour ma part, de ces gars-là, je ne connaissais que le nom, jusqu'à ce que ce Blackwater Park ne vienne titiller ma curiosité. Hérésie ? Sans nul doute. Voyons le bon côté des choses, cette chronique sera faite d’une oreille totalement neutre puisque je me situe plus du côté de l'auditeur innocent que du fan incontesté. Cependant, j'ai comme l'étrange sensation que je risque de basculer de l'autre rive en moins de temps qu'il n'en faut pour le dire.
Et ça tombe bien car du temps, OPETH ne nous en laisse pas vraiment. Dès "The Leeper Affinity" les riffs purement Death viennent nous claquer le visage. Toute cette déflagration nous prend aux tripes et nous sommes vite contraints de rentrer dans leur univers. Mais après avoir calmé quelque peu le jeu, la première partie acoustique ainsi qu'un chant clair mélancolique pointe le bout de son nez afin de nous reposer de cette entrée en matière. Jusque-là je n'ai pas eu à me plaindre, la réputation d'OPETH est loin d'être usurpée. Cet album est on ne peut plus riche, de part la brutalité se mêlant astucieusement à la mélancolie. Entre les souffles ardents à la "Bleak" ou les balades sinistres tel un "Harvest", tout le monde trouvera de quoi se délecter. Pour ma part, je rechignerais un peu au niveau des pistes qui durent un peu trop longtemps à mon goût (de six à douze minutes). Mais étant-donné que cela n'entache en rien le plaisir d'écoute, considérez cet album comme un chef-d’œuvre. Et oui, un de plus dans la vaste discographie d'OPETH. Pendant la totalité de cette heure qui compose Blackwater Park, je n'ai réussi à déceler ne serait-ce qu'une once de faille, même après plusieurs essais. Les morceaux sont peaufinés de toute part, et aucun n'est dénué d'intérêt car ils présentent tous une spécificité qui leur est propre. Malgré ses 12 ans d'ancienneté, Blackwater Park arrive toujours à nous envoyer dans un monde qui nous dépasse totalement. Ce monde, c'est celui d'OPETH.
C'est ainsi que m'inspire cet album. Je ne vous cache pas que je ne suis pas sorti indemne de ce voyage. J'étais loin de m'imaginer une telle richesse, et maintenant j'en paye les frais. Peut-être est-ce cette chose si particulière que l'on appelle le talent ? Si tel est le cas, Blackwater Park n'est pas à considérer comme un album, mais plutôt comme une histoire. Oui, une magnifique histoire qui nous transporte du début à la fin dans une sphère chaotique dont on ne veut pas se séparer. J'espère juste au fond de moi que l'épitaphe d'OPETH n'est pas près d'être gravée !
