STRYPER est un sujet qui fâche. Le plus célèbre groupe de White Metal a toujours occupé une place un peu particulière : décrié, conspué, hué… Vous pouvez cherché autant que vous voudrez, personne n’admet avoir écouté (et encore moins aimé) STRYPER. Pourtant ils ont vendu leurs albums par palettes entières ! Il a bien fallu des gens pour les acheter, non ?
Les américains ont subi les attaques les plus injustes :
- “Leurs tenues (rayées jaunes et noires) sont ridicules”. On oublie MOTLEY CRUE et l’ensemble de la scène Glam. Plus récemment, que dire de SLIPKNOT ?
- “Ils ne sont pas vraiment croyants, c’est juste du folklore pour vendre plus de disque”. Parce que vous croyez vraiment que les groupes de Black Metal sont tous satanistes (ou Viking) !?
- “C’est de la merde” : alors on a déjà écouté ?
Il faut bien l’admettre, "To Hell With The Devil" et "Soldiers Under Command" sont de putains d’albums. Par la suite les choses se sont gâtées mais il ressort de la carrière du groupe un paquet de bons morceaux auxquels un enregistrement live pouvait rendre justice. C’est chose faite aujourd’hui avec ces 13 titres enregistrés tout au long de la récente tournée de reformation.
Même si nous sommes loin de la grande époque, il semble que le public et le groupe aient pris beaucoup de plaisir à ces retrouvailles. Le combo connaît son affaire et enchaîne ses morceaux les plus célèbres avec une foi et une rigueur digne de l’Inquisition. Un son puissant donne aux nombreux riffs toute leur ampleur. Une seule ballade (“Honestly”) vient ralentir le rythme de ce live souvenir. Et après cette heure de Hard Rock, on constate que STRYPER a mieux vieilli que beaucoup de groupes de la même époque.
Le seul regret vient du morceau qui clôt le concert, “Closing Prayer”, qui n’est qu’une longue prière récitée par Michael Sweet. C’est pathétique et interminable (6 minutes), on aurait préféré entendre “Battle Hymn…” et “Surrender”.
