Bon, je suis une girouette. Non, n’insistez pas, je le sais… C’est comme ça, c’est dans mes gènes.
Depuis quelques semaines, je prône la complexité, les atmosphères, les longues plages de réflexion instrumentale, la nostalgie, le spleen, etc…
Et puis bang, sans prévenir, comme ça, un soir…
Un EP de Death Grind old school, au débotté… Un truc furieux, sept morceaux, onze minutes, et en plus, j’en suis content.
Une girouette je vous disais…
C’est comme ça, que puis je vous dire… Mon côté féminin sûrement…
Sauf que là pour le coup, pas d’ambiguïté chez MANIC SCUM. Distro made in Tombs in the Valley, un label pas spécialement réputé pour la tendresse de ses sorties, un EP concis, en cassette, comme à la grande époque du tape-trading, en gros, la légende revit, et c’est tant mieux…
Alors allons y. Balancez les questions.
A quelle sauce Better Left Undead va vous bouffer ?
Il me semblait avoir été clair…
Death Grind old school, ça vous parle ?
Non ?
Et bien, si vous êtes un fan de, disons… BRUTAL TRUTH vs EXHUMED, alors vous allez être servi. Le genre collé dans une marmite géante, avec la braise qui vous chatouille les poils du cul, évitant les gros oignons et les rondelles de carotte, avant que la votre ne grille.
Car dès « Wormfood » et ses coups de cymbales, l’avertissement tombe. Batterie à fond les gamelles, riff ultrasonique, borborygmes en avant, et on ne se préoccupe de rien.
« Undead Rising » joue les marteaux-pilons, et vous assomme de son tempo lourd comme une enclume, avant que tout ne s’emballe dans un délire Crust du plus bel effet, avec riff ludique en sus.
« Blood Junkies » ? Tout à fond, avec des passages up tempo qui charclent tout. Un genre de NAPALM à la « Mentally Murdered ». Vous voyez ? Mais avec en cadeau un pont Heavy tonitruant. Le petit plus made in USA…
Même topo pour « Haunt Of Fear », avec blast beats en option. Grognements inclus, il va de soi…
« The Chase - The Slaughter » est un interlude très… Dans le ton.
« Created To Kill » mérite diablement bien son nom. Crust, encore…
Et pour finir, un épilogue conséquent, véritable « hit » de cet EP, « Entombed For Eternity ». Là pour le coup les mecs, la comparaison avec le BRUTAL TRUTH de l’ami Lilker prend tout son sens… Même efficacité, même alternance furie/heavy, même down tempo ultra compact… C’est parfait !!
Vous pourriez vous dire, « Il a pété les plombs… Le Death Grind, ça existe depuis la fin des années 80, et il crie à la révélation !!! ».
Vous pourriez avoir raison. Mais ici, tout est analogique. La batterie sonne comme une baguette qui frappe sur des peaux, la distorsion est naturelle, la basse ronfle, et le chant est guttural, mais non traité, et garde encore un peu d’humanité.
Et de nos jours, entre les batteries triggées et le chant passé à l’harmonizer, on ne retrouve plus ses petits. Alors, Better Left Undead sonne du coup encore plus frais. C’est juste brutal, gore, mais artisanal, musical si j’osais. Et ça fait du bien.
Comme un vieux polaroïd qu’on retrouve sur une table basse.
Et puis de toute façon, je suis une girouette, c’est ma caution.
