Si j’avais voulu être logique, j’aurais dit qu’« Atlas », le tout dernier titre du groupe de Metalcore strasbourgeois ALL THE SHELTERS, qui a d’ailleurs fait l’objet d’un très beau vidéoclip, s’est inspiré ouvertement d’Atlas, le quatrième album des Australiens de PARKWAY DRIVE. Mais ce serait foutrement anachronique. Alors, étant donné que j’ai de l’affection pour l’illogisme, je vais vous la faire à l’envers. Aussi incroyable que ça puisse paraître, je suis intimement convaincu que PARKWAY DRIVE a été bluffé par ALL THE SHELTERS et que ce quatrième ouvrage est un hommage à peine dissimulé à l’œuvre du combo alsacien. Voilà qui a déjà plus de gueule. Et puisqu’on nage dans l’utopie, on pourrait même imaginer que ce nouveau full-lenght établisse une sorte de renouveau pour la petite troupe de Byron Bay, qui avait montré sur son précédent effort, Deep Blue, une drôle de passion pour le Metalcore stagnant.
Leur nom est un empire. Et l’empire va se redresser. PARKWAY DRIVE vient de s’offrir une seconde jeunesse, en bousculant énergiquement les codes d’un Metalcore qu’ils ont eux-mêmes construit. La chose est peut-être légèrement extrapolée, car même dans le meilleur des cas, les Australiens ne dévient jamais de leur trajectoire, restant profondément enracinés dans un Metalcore remuant et bagarreur. Ce qui fait toute la différence, c’est la spontanéité de cet album. Deep Blue faisait sa propre caricature. Atlas propose, le public dispose. Des idées, parfois maladroites, certainement pas vaines. Comme ces chœurs lancinants sur « Wild Eyes », qui haranguent l’auditeur. C’est tout sauf spectaculaire, mais ça marche. Et l’affaire prend une tournure vraiment intéressante sur « Dark Days » qui fait preuve d’une vraie recherche artistique, avec des lignes mélodiques cohérentes et fluides entrecoupées d’ellipses chaotiques. On n’avait plus entendu un PARKWAY DRIVE aussi inspiré depuis le commencement d’Horizons en 2007. Peut-être même que tout simplement, on n’a jamais entendu un PARKWAY DRIVE aussi inspiré. De manière très naturelle, Atlas, au fil de sa progression, convainc qu’il est le meilleur disque jamais écrit par ces mecs. L’habituelle perte de vitesse ressentie dans les ultimes instants est à peine perceptible. Et encore, si l’éponyme n’avait pas ces faux-airs de balade mélancolique teintée de violons en transe, on ne l’aurait même pas remarqué. Parce qu’il faut bien le dire, « Sleight Of Hand », « Snake Oil And Holy Water » et « Blue And The Grey » maintiennent la pression jusqu’au bout. Ces 48 minutes passent à une vitesse folle, comparées aux 44 interminables de Deep Blue. Il y a un gouffre entre ces deux qui s’appellent l’attraction. Même l’alternance vocale de Winston McCall, qui jongle entre screams nasillards et hurlements virils, est stupéfiante d’efficacité, elle qui ne m’avait jamais fait le moindre effet auparavant. C’est un nouveau départ pour PARKWAY DRIVE, j’en suis certain. Et ce dernier est rendu solennel par le simple plaisir de redécouvrir une formation au top de sa forme, chose qui n’était plus arrivée depuis, au bas mot, cinq ans.
Ces garçons évoluent pour la première fois dans un cocon qui matérialise une forme de sérénité musicale, comme si cette pochette était représentative de l’altitude prise par leur Metalcore. Ça vole très haut. Je dirais même que ça plane au-dessus de tout ce qu’on a pu entendre dernièrement. PARKWAY DRIVE a eu la bonne idée de se remettre en question, et je suis particulièrement heureux que cette œuvre complète et travaillée soit la leur. Parce qu’ils restent et resteront une formation influente. Encore plus depuis ce 26 octobre 2012.
