Ecrire pour BLOODBEAST après être passé à un cheveu d’aller bosser en Afrique du Sud, c’est remuer le couteau dans la plaie. La charmante ville de Pretoria, capitale administrative du pays, a été en 2011 le berceau d’un nourrisson bien bruyant. Et c’est peu dire que pour les locaux, avoir un groupe de Death / Grind qui puisse rivaliser avec les meilleures formations de scènes moins exotiques, c’est un luxe. Il leur aura fallu dix petits mois seulement pour finaliser leur premier effort, un certain Bloodlust qui a déjà le mérite d’avoir parcouru les quelques 16 000 kilomètres qui séparent Pretoria de notre France métropolitaine en un temps record. Un petit tour avec les italiens de FLESHGOD APOCALYPSE plus loin, l’heure est au constat. Des paysages fumants et apocalyptiques teintés d’un soupçon de désolation. C’est tout qu’il nous reste à contempler après une telle déferlante.
Nourri au bon Death, BLOODBEAST est un groupe qui maitrise. Si on ne peut pas vraiment dire que la scène sud-africaine est une source intarissable de talents, il convient néanmoins de prendre un tel phénomène avec tout le sérieux qu’il mérite. Parce qu’à l’instar d’un BEYOND CURE taïwanais, d’un LELAHELL algérien ou d’un ACRASSICAUDA irakien, l’exotisme réserve parfois son lot de surprises. Affirmer que cet album en est rempli serait mentir. Pour autant, il y a un charme qui opère, une sorte de compassion euphorique. Comme si on réalisait avec bonheur que ce pays vient de découvrir l’eau chaude. Pourtant, avec à sa tête le brillant Van666, science infuse au cœur des excellents ARCHITECTURE OF AGRESSION, ça n’aurait pas dû se passer ainsi. On retrouve dans certaines pistes de cette rondelle, comme « War Eternal » et son final convulsif grandiose, des intonations progressives dans les guitares qui trahissent un peu l’appartenance de leur leader à un groupe plus expérimental. BLOODBEAST, c’est dur sur l’homme, abrasif, méchamment technique. Rien à voir avec une quelconque forme de démagogie. Ces garçons savent pertinemment que leur chance de célébrité passe par un écho favorable dans la presse américano-européenne mais bizarrement, ils ont fait le choix de s’éloigner, presque dédaigneusement, des clichés qui plaisent tant. Cet album, bien que reprenant par-ci par-là les idées gores d’un CANNIBAL CORPSE, avec notamment cette intro qui gicle, ou des motifs plus techniques, dignes du ARSIS new-gen, s’inscrit dans une logique de démarcation. Il y a un feeling unique qui ravage l’intérieur de Bloodlust et qui le fait sonner différemment des standards. Le riffing est habile, nuancé de Thrash, pendant que la production a cet arrière-goût de rétro. Il y a comme un croisement entre la vague old et new-school qui opère et finalement, on se plait assez dans ces moments d’incertitude. Appliqués et généreux dans leurs efforts, ces messieurs ont une maitrise technique irréprochable de leurs instruments, variant constamment les cadences, cherchant toujours un compromis entre la violence expéditive du Grind et l’efficacité d’un Death / Thrash sobre et poignant. Très peu révolutionnaire, peut-être de peur de finir la tête dans un panier à salade comme Robespierre, ce disque met en avant tous ses autres atouts : vitesse d’exécution, camaïeux rythmiques, solos ciselés, voix abyssale vibrante, maturité dans le songwriting. Et à défaut d’être original, c’est homogène.
L’idée n’était certainement pas de pondre un album qui fasse l’unanimité. Et à le réécouter, encore et encore, je me rends compte que BLOODBEAST est un groupe certes prometteur, mais terriblement perfectible. Il leur faudra probablement encore un peu de temps pour rendre leurs efforts plus digestes, mais dans un tel contexte, la sortie prématurée de Bloodlust ne souffre pas de réelles contestations. En-soi, c’est déjà une victoire.
