Sortir un album par an à notre époque est quelque chose d’assez rare, surtout pour un groupe majeur… Mais sortir un album par an de qualité est une gageure encore plus difficile à accomplir…
C’est pourtant le cas de BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION, qui après 1 et 2 nous offrent en cette fin d’année Afterglow, la suite logique de leur fabuleuse aventure.
Pour ceux qui auraient pris le train en cours de route, BCC comme on se plaît à les nommer, n’est rien de moins qu’une entité cachant des individualités plus que notables… Jason Bonham (ex plein de gros trucs) au kit, Derek Sherinian (ex plein de groupes connus) au clavier, Joe Bonamassa (guitariste hors du commun) à la six cordes, et rien de moins que Glenn Hughes (ex…Je suis vraiment obligé de le préciser ??) à la basse et au chant.
En gros, en détail, au microscope, des pointures, des cadors, mais qui en plus de l’air, ont la chanson depuis longtemps.
Et ça tombe bien, parce qu’ensemble, au sein de BCC, ils nous en offrent des tas, et des meilleures.
Soyons clair. L’année dernière, 2 m’avait laissé sur le cul, passez moi l’expression. Ce Hard Rock bluesy profond, c’était mon truc, sans aucun doute. Il y avait tout ce qu’on pouvait attendre d’un grand album de Hard Rock. La puissance, le feeling, les mélodies, la technique. La copie parfaite, qu’on est en droit d’exiger d’un groupe de ce calibre, mais qui surprend quand même.
Et puis que voulez vous, la voix de Glenn associée à la guitare de Joe, c’est juste… Magique. Point. Un peu comme si Jennifer Connely me faisait des pâtes pendant que Mary Elizabeth Winstead me masse. Vous voyez ? Moi, oui, très bien.
Alors, parlons d’Afterglow. Que pourrais-je vous dire ? Qu’il est très bon ? Oui, il l’est. Qu’il est quand même un cheveu en dessous de son prédécesseur ? Oui, c’est un fait. Mais dans le cas de BCC, ça veut encore dire magnifique. Un album raté, pour ces quatre la, ça n’existe pas, c’est du domaine du fantasme bas de gamme de scribouilleur aigri. Car une fois de plus, vous aurez droit à onze titres gorgés de feeling, survolés par la voix du maître, et la guitare du calife. Ce Hard Rock fin, racé, savant mélange du PURPLE Mark IV et du ZEP le plus pur, s’apprécie comme un grand vin. L’esprit libre de toute contrainte, dans une ambiance soignée, en bonne compagnie, ou seul c’est selon.
Alors bien sur, Afterglow sonne comme une digression fine des deux précédents efforts. Mais pas de redite ici, juste un choix de composition, une option délibérée, celle de rester fidèle à sa nature, et de jouer une musique qui vient du cœur et des tripes.
On y retrouvera au choix, les sonorités de feu John Lord (« Common Man », qui ferait défriser un Coverdale non averti), du binaire qui groove (« Confessor » au riff qui paie son tribut à Page), des intonations plus plantiennes que nature (« Big Train »), de longues digressions introspectives secouées par des éclairs électriques (« The Circle », magnifique), en gros, ce que BCC sait faire de mieux, mieux que quiconque surtout.
Mais noyé dans cette tradition, on tombe parfois sur des bouées surprises agréables, telle « Midnight Sun », aux accents GENESIS période Collins au chant, légèrement teinté de YES si l’on ose le débordement, qui soudain explose dans un déluge Hard Rock expansif, ou encore l’apaisé et presque Pop « The Giver ».
Et comment passer sous silence la perle du CD, bien que cette appellation puisse quasiment couvrir l’intégralité de l’album, qui est une fois de plus le title-track à l’intro si délicate et au refrain si puissant, véritable parangon de l’art précieux du quartette, avec ces longues litanies surannées soudainement striées de lacérations Heavy du meilleur effet.
BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION… Etrange impression en fait… Comme si un dinosaure des 70’s avait trouvé une faille spatio-temporelle pour venir nous compter fleurette en 2012… Une musique riche, offerte par un groupe généreux… Une addiction en fait, un plaisir non coupable que l’on reconnaît sans trembler… Las… Car mauvaise nouvelle il y a.
En effet, Afterglow pourrait être, si l’on en croit Glenn, le dernier album de BCC, puisque l’emploi du temps de Joe ne leur permettrait pas de poursuivre leur chemin.
Que ceci serait un énorme gâchis. Après trois albums de cette trempe, après nous avoir tant fait vibrer en si peu de temps…
Alors, le seul conseil que je pourrais vous donner, serait d’apprécier cet album pour sa valeur double. Un LP fabuleux, qui pourrait bien être la conclusion d’une si belle histoire.
Après tout, c’était peut être un jour de chance.
Et ils suivront chacun leur chemin.
Mais je refuse de penser au lendemain.
