« Avec cet album, nous avons voulu pousser nos émotions dans leurs derniers retranchements ». Parole de SIGNS PREYER. Alors je veux bien, chacun sa sensibilité et tout et tout, mais si le combo italien a atteint ses limites émotionnelles avec la réalisation de ce premier album éponyme, j’aime autant penser qu’à l’instar de Jon Nödtveidt (DISSECTION) qui s’en est allé de son propre chef après avoir accompli son œuvre, se terrer dans le silence serait une sortie plus qu’honorable pour ses membres. Il faut être franc. Ce disque ne révolutionne rien et ne le fera jamais, parce que l’Histoire du Rock et du Hard Rock est écrite depuis fort longtemps et qu’on a pas forcément besoin d’incessantes relectures. SIGNS PREYER nous en fait pourtant une. Et une belle. Des moins passionnantes, cela va sans dire. A peine un divertissement. Et encore, je ne pense pas que le terme employé soit le plus adéquat. Car entre le divertissement et le profond ennui, c’est bien ce second feeling qui l’emporte.
Le premier riff vraiment accrocheur déboule au bout d’un quart d’heure de jeu, sur « Killer Instinct ». C’est dire s’il se sera fait attendre au cours d’une première moitié d’album (oui, déjà) qui laisse de marbre. Groovy, entrainant, un peu comme LORDI sait les pondre, il offrira une nouvelle chance à cette rondelle qui démarrait de la pire des manières. SIGNS PREYER a d’abord cherché à s’illustrer dans un Hard Rock sudiste qui fleure bon le buffle en chaleur. Ou plutôt le buffle en décomposition sous la chaleur. Car aucune odeur de barbecue ni de bitume chaud ne vient titiller nos narines. Pire, encore. Ce sont les vapeurs insipides d’un réchauffé de chez Picard qui s’incrustent. A quoi riment les samples pornos sur « Bitch Witch » ? A faire oublier à quel point ce morceau est médiocre ? Raté ! Alors, voyant que sa petite entreprise fait un bide, ils se sont essayé à des choses plus Sludge / Groove Metal bizarroïde, teinté d’un potentiel Heavy volubile à la BLACK LABEL SOCIETY. Là encore, c’est un échec, car jamais Zakk Wylde n’apparaît comme une influence crédible pour le groupe. Les Italiens sont à la traîne et ce, en dépit d’une volonté fièrement tournée vers un feeling Rock N’ Roll plein d’authenticité et aux limites du traditionalisme. Ce disque groove ! Et c’est tout ce que j’ai pu lui trouver de positif. Car que ce soit au niveau du chant (Johnny, sur « Dark Soul », on t’en supplie, sors de ce corps), et ses paroles en anglais débitées avec un accent italien à couper au couteau ou au niveau des structures, SIGNS PREYER apparaît comme une formation molle, sans aucune finesse, sans aucune élégance. La production approximative n’arrange rien. Cette dernière manque clairement de puissance et n’apporte strictement aucun relief à des morceaux pourtant écrits pour deux guitares et interprétés comme tel. Ce n’est même pas mauvais. Et je prends l’ultime « Signs Preyer », son riff béton et ses cadences texanes pour témoin. C’est juste horriblement plat, rébarbatif et en manque cruel d’assaisonnement. Dommage que SIGNS PREYER ne soit pas durablement à la hauteur de la composition qui porte fièrement son nom et qu’ils aient pondu un premier essai qui brille uniquement par très courtes intermittences. Aussi je vous conseille, pour ne pas gâcher ce très agréable soubresaut final, de ne pas chercher à trouver la piste bonus qui, elle, verse dans l’inutilité pure.
A part ça, tout va bien ! Les Italiens ont poussé leurs émotions dans leurs derniers retranchements et c’est à peu près tout ce qu’on leur souhaitait. Pour ma part, j’ai fait l’expérience et je dois dire que la seule émotion que m’a inspiré Signs Preyer, c’est la tristesse. Tristesse, parce que ces mecs ont prouvé qu’ils avaient les atouts pour injecter un groove très malin dans leur musique. Malheureusement, cet opus invalide également la théorie selon laquelle on peut faire du bon Metal sudiste, sans pour autant avoir d’origines texanes ou mississipiennes.
