Nous sommes ce que nous faisons après tout… Ou bien faisons nous ce à quoi nous sommes prédestinés ? Vaste sujet, QCM de l’enfer, inné vs acquis, personne n’a encore donné de réponse viable et définitive, et c’est peut être mieux ainsi.
Mais admettons pour le jeu le premier choix possible comme seule alternative.
En ce cas, Neal SCHON est un musicien talentueux, honnête, passionné, voué à une seule cause, celle de son instrument, de son art, et des mélodies et sons qu’il peut en tirer.
Vous aimez le Hard Rock simple mais racé ? Vous n’avez donc pas pu passer à côté de la carrière de son groupe d’origine, JOURNEY, la machine à hits Américaine parfaite, mixant avec bonheur riffs assassins et ballades main dans la main.
JOURNEY, qu’aucun Rock critic revanchard n’a jamais réussi à mettre à terre, et qui continue de produire des albums de toute beauté.
Tout au long de ce « voyage », Neal aura été un capitaine parfait, individualité brillante au service d’un ensemble homogène, n’ayant pour but que d’offrir la meilleure musique possible. Mais tout capitaine a besoin d’une halte, dans un port, n’importe où dans le monde. Pour vivre un peu pour lui, par lui, et pour s’offrir un havre de paix.
C’est ce que Neal s’offre avec cet effort solo, The Calling. L’appel. Quel titre parfaitement choisi. Mais quel appel ? Celui des sirènes du show business ? Celui des impératifs commerciaux ? Non, le seul auquel il ait envie de répondre. Celui de sa guitare.
Alors, il l’enfourche pour lui, pour nous, avec la même conviction qui l’a toujours animé. Et c’est parti pour un nouveau voyage, autant introspectif que ludique.
Ici, pas de garde fou, pas de chanteur pour détourner l’attention, les lumières sont toutes braquées sur lui. Ca, Neal le sait, et s’en moque. Il veut jouer, c’est tout, et n’a plus rien à prouver depuis fort longtemps.
Alors il y va, il fonce tête baissée et nous offre une douzaine d’instrumentaux, dans la plus grande tradition du genre, et louvoie entre les différents styles, du morceau teigneux au Jazz Rock light, en passant par les arpèges délicats et le groove renégat.
Des reproches ? Oui sans doute, mais quelle importance…Car tout ce qu’on pourrait pointer du doigt histoire de pinailler et d’égratigner une légende, nous l’avons déjà fait des centaines de fois… C’est un album de guitare instrumentale, joué par une pointure, au jeu classique, posé, précis, alors, inutile de faire la fine bouche et de dire que ce qu’il fait, Satriani, Vaï, Malmsteen ou McAlpine l’ont fait avant lui et en plus original, on le sait très bien, et comme Neal…On s’en fout !
Parce que c’est bien joué, parce que ça remplit à merveille son contrat, et qu’il arrive à nous enchanter une fois de plus…
Du précieux « Irish Field » à l’alambiqué « Back Smash » aux multiples ambiances, en passant par l’oriental up tempo « Fifty Six », le progressif « Tumbleweeds » aux arrangements surprenants, ou encore l’harmonieux « Six String Waltz », et le Funk lourd « Transonic Funk », chacun trouvera chaussure à son pied, et saura apprécier à sa juste valeur le jeu si subtil du maître.
Quant aux autres, je crois que de toute façon, ils seront passés à autre chose depuis longtemps…Grand bien leur en fasse !
Car nous, fans de mister SCHON, saurons le remercier pour ce nouveau cadeau, ultime preuve, s’il en fallait une, de son indéniable talent de conteur musical.
En attendant une prochaine excursion avec ses coéquipiers, vers les étoiles qu’il a côtoyées si souvent…
