Folklore And Superstition s'annonce différent du premier album des BLACK STONE CHERRY qui était un éponyme. Les BSC misent sur un public qu'ils n'avaient pas encore su conquérir : les filles ! C'est donc un peu mission séduction pour notre quatuor du Kentucky. Mais comment donner envie à des filles d'acheter un album de Hard-Rock US hyper machiste ? Voyons comment Chris, Jon, Ben et John Fred vont s'y prendre pour rester toujours authentique et en même temps, captiver un public féminin sans délaisser leurs fans masculins.
Le morceau d'ouverture ''Blind Man'' reste fidèle à ce Rock US très musclé reconnaissable des BLACK STONE CHERRY avec son refrain entrainant proche des sonoritées sauvages de leur 1er opus. ''Please Come In'' déçoit par un côté old-school chamallow qui s'éssoufle vite. Mais c'est mal connaitre les BSC ! Ils enchaînent par un morceau plus vivifiant que son prédécesseur, ''Reverend Wrinkle''. Guitares groovies et mélange de sonoritées proches de celles de MOTORHEAD et de LYNYRD SKYNYRD. Mais quelque chose cloche déjà dans ce deuxième opus. Le groupe ne succomberait-il pas à la balade mièvreuse pour son public féminin ? Et bah si ! Grave erreur qu'il ne fallait pas commettre ... On se serait passé de morceaux comme ''Things My Father Said'', ''Peace Is Free'' et ''You'' qui apparaissent comme fades et sans intérêts. Pourquoi faut-il absolument vouloir séduire des filles avec des balades nunuches ? Les filles ont toujours sauté dans les bras des mauvais garçons avides de liberté, plus que dans ceux de romantiques en mal d'amour ou de sexe. La bonne solution aurait été de rester simplement fidèle à leur charme naturel, sentant bon les cow-boys rockeurs de la côte Est des Etats-Unis. Et puis la voix chaude et virile si particulière de Chris Robertson fait déjà fondre, j'en suis sûre, beaucoup d'oreilles féminines. La pochette accuse elle aussi le coup de cette opération ''femelles''. Le groupe prend sa plus belle pose de boys-band afin d'être le plus attirant possible. Pathétique. Bref, heureusement que le reste de l'opus relève le niveau jusque là assez décevant de ce groupe qui nous avait habituer à une puissance dans son Hard Rock old school et US, si captivant et vivifiant. ''The Bitter End'' impose une très belle intro et un rythme quasi-parfait. Du pur BLACK STONE CHERRY !
Mixé et produit par un veteran du Rock US, Bob Marlette (ALICE COOPER, QUIET RIOT), Folklore And Superstition bénéficie du savoir-faire musical de ce monsieur dont la réputation n'est plus à faire aux Etats-Unis. L'album est d'ailleurs enregistré dans les Studios Black Bird appartenant à Martina McBride, une artiste de la scène Country à Nashville dans le Tennesse. Influences tout à fait audibles dans le morceau ''The Keys'' et ''Long Sleeves''.
L'album s'arrête noralement sur le morceau ''Ghost Of Floyd Collins'' mais comme c'est une édition spéciale, trois morceaux ralongent cet opus. Quoi ? Phil Collins ? Non. Et c'est même pas un cousin éloigné. Mais qui est donc ce Floyd Collins ? En fait en cherchant un peu, on apprend que Monsieur William Floyd Collins était l’un des premiers spéléologues des années 20 qui eu la malchance de rester coincé dans une grotte du Kentucky. On le retrouvera mort, ce qui entraina un déchainement médiatique autour de ce malheureux évenement. ''Junkman'', ''Stranger'' et ''Bulldozer'', les trois extensions sont assez identiques dans leurs compositions et n'apportent rien de plus à l'album initial.
Les BLACK STONE CHERRY décoivent sur cette deuxième galette. C'est à croire que leur quête de séduction du public féminin à pris le dessus, ne laissant que peu de place au reste. Des morceaux comme ''Devil's Queen'', ''The Bitter End'', ''Sunrise'', ''Blind Man'' ou encore ''The Keys'' ressortent de l'opus de par leur originalité et leur efficacité. Loin d'être la succession de Black Stone Cherry, Folklore And Superstition nous livre, comme son nom l'indique, les clefs pour comprendre dans quel univers le quatuor puise son inspiration musicale. Des influences Country, Hard Rock et old-cchool s'y cotoient et apportent au groupe une griffe unique.
