Il y a bien longtemps que la scène Nordique a établi son propre mode de fonctionnement. Ses techniciens, toujours avec une longueur d’avance, ne badinent pas avec les codes. Pourtant, on trouve à l’intérieur même de ce cercle très fermé des groupes qui empoignent les lois, s’en amusent et surtout, les enfreignent. Ce n’est pas le cas de CLONECIRCLE, même si leur concept détonnant pétille et fait jaser. Au pays du Death Metal, qu’il soit mélodique ou moderne, les Danois se rangent plutôt dans un style cyber-gothico-indus-electro, loin, très loin des mouvements les plus populaires. Du coup, ce sont les vieux fans du Révérend qui seront les plus susceptibles de se pencher de près sur ce combo, qui sort avec Behind The Wire son second album. On se dit même que Manson a eu tort de se faire retirer des côtes, tant CLONECIRCLE semble à l’aise avec les prestations bucco-génitales.
Allez, trêve de taquineries, Behind The Wire c’est certes plein d’œillades flagrantes mais c’est également loin d’être un grotesque copycat. Il ne faudra que quelques minutes pour s’en convaincre. Le quatuor s’offre avec l’éponyme son premier hit en puissance. On y retrouve des nappes de synthés futuristes et un peu hurluberlues, qui saucent des riffs industriels. FEAR FACTORY n’est pas loin, OOMPH non plus. Cependant, la palme de la ressemblance revient à DEATHSTARS, tant dans le concept un peu martial et totalement loufoque que dans la musique, écrite et exécutée avec beaucoup de facilité. Et malgré un refrain accrocheur, cette piste évolue directement sur un faux-rythme. Tout est facile, tout est lisse mais surtout, tout est mollasson. Les riffs Indus oui, mais seulement quand ils sont percutants. Pour le coup, le duo Morten-Thomas met très peu d’impact dans le riffing, d’où la sensation désagréable d’avoir affaire à la plus mauvaise soupe de la gamme Liebig. Il y a une étiquette « Metal de supermarché » qui colle assez vite à cet opus, la faute aux ritournelles faciles, aux cadences lymphatiques et aux élucubrations électroniques factices. Les mots sont durs, mais on ne peut s’empêcher de penser que CLONECIRCLE n’a pas encore défini clairement son orientation. Le chant vaporeux, plutôt clair de Martin Hellgren fait sans cesse penser à celui de Manson, bien qu’il parvienne à devenir rugueux sur certaines lignes. Aussi, dans cet enchevêtrement malhabile de Cyber Metal, d’Indus, d’Electro, on ne comprend pas bien l’intérêt d’en rajouter des tonnes, soit avec le chant féminin de Winni (la femme de Thomas) sur la balade Cyber-gothique « Thunder And The Rain », soit avec des ambiances aux limites du romantisme gothopouf-cœur-d’artichaut si cher à CRADLE OF FILTH. Il y a trop d’éléments qui se bousculent, à tel point que les Danois passent du coq à l’âne entre deux chansons sans assurer aucune transition. Trop facile d’accès, Behind The Wire présente une musique généreuse mais fade, en décalage plutôt important avec le visuel du groupe, qui lui est original et prometteur. On a clairement l’impression que les Danois accumulent les mauvais choix et c’est dommage, parce qu’il y a ce je-ne-sais-quoi qui fait qu’on reste accroché jusqu’au bout. Et pour une fois, ce n’est pas la conscience professionnelle. La présence de l’incontournable Jacob Hansen dans l’équipe technique est d’autant plus frustrante qu’en bon scandinaves, les CLONECIRCLE ont veillé à nous offrir une production aux petits oignons.
Ces garçons ont voulu créer quelque chose. Ils ont réussi. Si cet album manque un peu d’originalité, de fluidité et de maturité, on ne pourra guère lui reprocher de n’avoir aucune personnalité. Les Scandinaves ont réalisé un boulot énorme sur les atmosphères et les arrangements, assumant jusqu’au bout leur délire Indus/Gothic. Mais ça ne paye pas. Les gens en ont définitivement marre de l’easy-listening et du maquillage. Ils veulent du concret. Et si CLONECIRCLE propose un look et un concept déjanté qui plaira à beaucoup, on attend au moins de sa musique, dans les structures, dans son impact, dans sa capacité à nous toucher, qu’elle soit au même niveau.
