Formé en 2000, SARGEIST ne fait pas partie des piliers du genre Black Metal, malgré un très bon premier album du nom de Satanic Black Devotion, lui aussi sorti sur Moribund Records, tout comme leur nombreux splits, dont un avec les français de TEMPLE OF BAAL (Grievantee Productions).
Dès la mise en lecture du skeud, ça part plutôt bien. Pas d'intro a rallonge comme c'est souvent le cas dans le Black pur et dur. La première chanson passe assez bien et plutôt rapidement sur fond de riff assez énergique et tranchant, accompagné de plusieurs changements de rythmes très bien exécutés. Il faut savoir que la première chanson est la plus courte (4 minutes) car le deuxième morceau qui s'intitule « Remains Of An Unholy Past » dure près de 8 minutes 30. La compo essaye de poser l'ambiance avec ce riff hypnotique qui vous restera surement en tête, mais tout cela s'essouffle autour de quelques minutes. Malgré un break et un changement rythmique, la magie n'opère qu'a moitié et malheureusement, c'est le cas pour le reste de l'album. En dépit de riffs bien amenés, on tombe quand même vite dans la lassitude. Les guitares sont redondantes et presque simplistes, ce qui donne l'impression qu'au final, les compos, ici au nombre de 6, se ressemble beaucoup trop. C’est plus que dommage car on sent que les zickos on voulu travailler sur la mélancolie et le coté sombre de leur musique. On y arrive presque mais le résultat est plus que mitigé et donne des titres longuets, autour de 6 minutes avec des passages creux. Peut-être que quelques blasts un peu plus violents auraient pu relancer la machine à certains moments mais il n'en est rien. Pour parler de la production, elle est correcte dans l’ensemble sauf peut-être le son de batterie un peu étouffé par la gratte. Niveau vocaux, on a affaire à quelque chose de typiquement Black, voire trop criard, un peu genre voix de corbeau a certains moments. Pour la petite anecdote de fin, ce groupe a été annulé du Party San Open Air 2012 car ils auraient des tendances nationalistes, ce qui selon moi reste à prouver car rien, ni dans l'imagerie ni dans les textes, n’y fait référence.
La conclusion est qu’on reste sur sa faim, surtout quand on connaît le potentiel du groupe après le très bon premier opus. Ici, c'est la longueur et les compositions un peu assommantes qui font que ce disque n'est pas forcement très réussi et reste assez maladroit dans la maitrise du sujet. Du coup l’ensemble est très passable et ne donne pas envie d’être écouté en boucle.
