On pourrait s'étonner de voir débouler dans les bacs un nouveau KILLING JOKE moins de 2 ans après l'excellent Absolute Dissent. Après tout, cela faisait déjà longtemps que les pères du Post-punk avaient adopté le rythme confortable du vieux groupe qui n'a plus rien à prouver, sortant au mieux un album tous les 3 ans. Mais c'était sans compter l'urgence fixée par le calendrier Maia ; un rendez-vous qui s'impose à l'humanité en général et à Jaz Coleman en particulier.
Car voilà plus de trente ans qu'il nous le chante sur tous les tons mais cette année c'est sûr, on va tous crever ! Et pas de la façon la plus douce qui soit, oh non ! Au menu des réjouissances, nous aurons d'abord un "Pole shift" (une inversion des pôles nord et sud) qui promet de semer une belle pagaille à la surface de la Terre. Si l'ambiance glaciale distillée par les synthés ponctuant très efficacement ce morceau d'ouverture ne suffisait pas à vous coller des frissons, Jaz a eu la bonne idée d'ajouter dans le livret les liens internet qui lui ont inspiré ses paroles. Bon courage pour dormir sur vos deux oreilles après ça ! De toutes manières, si Mère Nature ne nous engloutit pas tous, l'Humanité elle-même se chargera du sale boulot, emportée par sa folie auto-destructrice. C'est à peu près ce qu'il ressort de "Fema Camp", second morceau qui démarre lui aussi sur des synthés évoquant John Carpenter avant d'enchainer sur une rythmique lourde qui nous renvoie aux grandes heures Metal du groupe. Mauvaises ondes telluriques et brutalité occidentale ont toujours fait partie des sujets de prédilection du groupe. Mais cet album ne se limite pas à une suite de visions catastrophistes d'un monde finissant. Quelques timides notes d'optimisme viennent apaiser le propos. Ainsi les nappes de synthés (encore eux!) qui baignent "In Cythera" d'une douce lumière, combinées au chant aérien d'un Coleman tout en douceur invitent à la rêverie. Même habitué aux prouesses vocales du chanteur-gourou, on peine toujours à croire que c'est la même personne qui vous aboie aux oreilles deux titres plus loin. C'est oublier que cet insaisissable personnage du Rock a toujours excellé dans l'art du contrepied. Lui que l'on croyait obsédé par le millénarisme depuis sa disparition momentanée en Islande il y a 30 ans est récemment revenu sur cet épisode dans les pages de Rock'N'Folk, affirmant que non-non, pas du tout, il ne cherchait pas à fuir l'apocalypse mais avait juste besoin de se ressourcer pour découvrir qui il était vraiment. MMXII ne serait-il alors comme le film du même nom qu'un vulgaire coup marketing monté par des gens ne croyant pas à leur sujet ? On sent bien une intention de satisfaire le plus grand nombre en piochant dans l'ensemble du patrimoine musical du groupe des éléments de toutes périodes pour les assembler en arrondissant un peu les angles. "Rapture" en est le parfait exemple, calibré pour sonner comme du KILLING JOKE, catchy à souhait mais guère novateur. Cependant, ces considérations sur la sincérité artistique du projet s'effacent devant son efficacité. Exception faite de "Colony collapse", simplement mauvais, chaque titre touche sa cible. Et même si, comme on l'a vu, les synthés prennent quelque peu l'ascendant sur la guitare de Geordie, c'est au bénéfice d'une esthétique eighties soignée, en totale cohérence avec l'identité sonore de KILLING JOKE. Alors espérons que cet album ne sera pas le dernier et que l'humanité aura encore l'occasion d'entendre quelques bonnes blagues-qui-tuent comme celle-ci dans les années à venir.
