Parler d’AGNOSYS un an après la sortie de son premier album peut-il être considéré comme une faute professionnelle ? Là est tout l’enjeu de cette chronique. On pourra croire qu’à Metal-Impact, on a des choses à se faire pardonner. Mais voilà bien longtemps que leur réputation est faite. Alors au fond, ce papier ne changera pas grand-chose, d’autant plus qu’il tire dans la même direction que ceux de nos confrères, à grands renforts d’éloges soutenues. Il y en a eu, des belles surprises en 2011. Eux en font incontestablement partie. Discrets voir muets depuis la sortie de leur premier EP, Equilibrium en septembre 2004, les franciliens ont eu du flair avec leur Alterations, qui revisite brillamment différents courants, sans se départir d’une franchise qu’on apprécie toujours, surtout quand elle concerne un groupe français qui nous autorise à un brin de chauvinisme.
Oui, les formations tricolores de haut-niveau sont légions. Oui, elles foisonnent plus que de raison. Mais rien ne vous poussera à vous pencher davantage sur AGNOSYS sans un minimum d’argumentation. Alors autant essayer d’être concis. Nos amis commencent leur album avec « From The Heights, From The Depths » et qu’on soit clair, s’ils assument leurs affinités avec le Death Metal scandinave, ce n’est pas anodin. Tout s’y rapporte inconsciemment, à tel point que certaines formations comme AT THE GATES, HYPCORISY ou encore EDGE OF SANITY n’auraient pas décliné le carton d’invitation. Ce Metal extrêmement bien structuré est le fruit d’un long travail de composition merveilleusement retranscrit. On comprend très facilement les émotions qu’AGNOSYS cherche à dégager, même s’il faudra plusieurs écoutes approfondies pour faire le tour complet de la bête. Ce qui est véritablement frappant, c’est que les français ne sont pas bêtement bloqués sur du Death. Tout au long de cette œuvre, ils multiplient les appels de phare, au Thrash, au Black, au Brutal Death, au Death mélo tout en y ajoutant des ambiances propres au Death atmosphérique ou des mid-tempos planants. Capable de varier son jeu en une fraction de seconde, de morceler ses compos en différentes palettes d’émotions, comme sur la très réussie « Towards A Crimson Gorged Progeny », AGNOSYS dévoile une maturité vraiment enthousiasmante. Si les morceaux sont un peu longs parce que très fournis, on ne s’ennuie à aucun moment. C’aurait été tentant de penser qu’un tel groupe puisse vite s’essouffler, mais c’est loin d’être le cas. Alterations reste en éveil jusque dans les derniers instants, toujours enrichis d’atmosphères diverses et variées, de chœurs sépulcraux, de tonalités spirituelles dignes d’une sacristie. « Tantalos » est un exemple particulièrement frappant des efforts qui sont consentis jusqu’à la dernière seconde. C’est d’autant plus remarquable que les temps forts d’un disque se trouvent rarement en bout de course.
En plus de répartir intelligemment ses arguments, AGNOSYS peut se vanter d’avoir sorti en 2011 un album intemporel, qui fera toujours le même effet dans quelques années. C’est surement l’avantage de refuser de se barricader dans un style précis, tout en gardant une ligne directrice clairement définie et non-discutable. Je suis vraiment tenté de croire qu’avec ce premier essai, AGNOSYS a déjà compris pas mal de choses. Tout le monde ne peut pas en dire autant.
