Allez, pour cette première chronique de l’année de la fin du monde, une petite question pour commencer. Et répondez franchement, ne mettez pas votre hésitation sur le compte du champagne dont vous avez abusé ou du foie gras de Tata Micheline qui vous a plâtré l’estomac !
Combien de fois vous a-t-on fait le coup du "Revival Thrash 80’s plus vrai que nature, que même que tu vois pas la différence avec les groupes de l’époque, hein ?".
Oui, vous avez raison. Trop souvent. Et vous savez quoi ? Et bien cette fois ci, c’est moi qui m’y mets !!!!
Sauf que là, c’est justifié. Je développe.
Déjà responsables d’un Divinity of Death en 2010 hautement recommandable lui aussi, NEKROMANTHEON se moque des conventions et joue son va-tout crânement, comme s’il était issu du Thrash Boom de 83. Et croyez moi ou non, ça fonctionne ! Et si le groupe cite SLAYER pour exemple, il s’agit bien sur d’un moyen de repérage comme un autre, tant leur musique évoque plus volontiers RAZOR, EXUMER ou même par moments (« Raised By Dogs ») un EXODUS vraiment hargneux.
La référence à DARK ANGEL est tout aussi pertinente. Entre les coups de boutoirs balancés tous azimuts et le chant vraiment investi d’Arild, les similitudes entre les deux combos sont plus qu’évidentes. Même tendance à l’excès de vitesse, mêmes riffs tranchants et sombres, même inclinaison à l’ultra violence efficace. Ca tranche, mais sec et net, et ça ne laisse pas de trace.
Alors, j’aurais tendance à dire que vous avez le choix. Car même si le morceau d’ouverture, « Cast Down To The Void » pourrait représenter la carte de visite ultime du trio, tant tous ses atouts sont présents dans le jeu, le reste de l’album n’a rien à lui envier.
De quickies infernaux (« Blood Wisdom », « Twelve Depths of Hades ») en incartades vraiment méchantes (« The Usurper Command », « Embrace the Oracle »), la cadence ne souffre d’aucun ralentissement, et les trente deux minutes au compteur ronronnent comme un V12 bien huilé.
Alors oui, vous me direz, la comparaison serait facile…Mais rien, et je le souligne, Rise, Vulcan Spectre ne doit rien à son illustre aîné Reign In Blood, car NEKROMANTHEON a une identité propre, qu’il se plait à constamment mettre en avant avec des riffs – s’ils restent traditionnels – qui résonnent comme autant d’hommages à la génération bénie qui sévissait il y a déjà presque trente ans.
Plus proches des racines que ne le sera jamais WARBRINGER, NEKROMANTHEON dame le pion à bon nombre de ses confrères qui confondent souvent admiration et plagiat. Alors, en cette orée de fin du monde, si vous souhaitez anticiper un peu et entrevoir ce que sera le cataclysme qui engloutira notre planète, envoyez vous Rise, Vulcan Spectre, car il vaut mieux partir les oreilles averties non ?
