Je vais commencer cette chronique par le plus facile, à savoir vous présenter ION DISSONANCE comme étant un groupe canadien. Et au Canada, ils savent y faire niveau violence. De KATAKLYSM aux très regrettés DESPISED ICON, la populace a toujours eu un goût prononcé pour la musique extrême. Le gros cliché de base sur les bûcherons étant maintenant introduit, passons plus en détail sur la dissection d’un quatrième album qui s’imposera de lui-même comme une déflagration d’une incroyable intensité. J’ai moi-même beaucoup d’affinités avec les groupes bruitistes et minimalistes, mais de mémoire d’épicurien, rarement un album de Deathcore ne m’a paru aussi brutal et chaotique, tout en préservant soigneusement ce côté scientifique propre au Mathcore alambiqué nord-américain. Cursed est donc un opus à manipuler avec beaucoup de précautions, car il n’hésitera pas à vous exploser en pleine gueule.
D’ailleurs, il n’a même pas besoin d’autorisation pour. Sismique à s’en demander si monsieur Richter a bien calculé son coup, Cursed déploie une panoplie technique beaucoup trop difficile à suivre, même pour les oreilles les plus exercées. Les guitares 8-cordes, une première pour eux, sont constamment en tension, quand elles ne lacèrent pas les tympans de riffs frénétiques et joués les doigts en sang. Alors parfois, on a droit à des mid-tempos, comme si on n’avait pas encore compris que cet opus a pour unique objectif de nous euthanasier lentement mais surement. Dans sa course effrénée, ce Deathcore qui ne ressemble pas du tout à celui qu’on a l’habitude d’entendre, croise le fer avec le Hardcore (voire le Post-Hardcore pachydermique) et le Djent tout en TEXTURES, bien que largement moins jusqu’au-boutiste. Ne cherchez pas ici le moindre tube à fredonner dans le métro, le moindre refrain entêtant, ces compositions aux ossements volatiles sont simplement injouables. Par contre, les canadiens tiennent à s’appuyer sur une section rythmique d’une précision chirurgicale, que ce soit la basse qui œuvre dans un ronronnement sans fin, moucheté d’explosions aléatoires ou la batterie de J-F Richard qui se plait à défier les lois mathématiques en délivrant des patterns à la cohésion plus littéraire que scientifique. Et dans le genre rouleau compresseur, ION DISSONANCE nous fait le plaisir de donner le meilleur de lui-même sur certaines créations triées sur le volet, dont une « This Is The Last Time I Repeat Myself » particulièrement bandante, avec en plus la participation d’Alex Erian (ex-DESPISED ICON) qui beugle avec férocité sur des breaks hypnotiques. On frôle la magie ! Ce qui n’est pas le cas, il faut le reconnaître, sur la plupart des plages qui privilégient le fond à la forme. Un fond opaque, noir comme le sang et âpre comme le venin. Un défouloir exaltant. Des salves cathartiques. Que ça fait du bien !
On n’ira pas vraiment jusqu’à dire que Cursed est un album complet. On sent à certains endroits un manque. Manque de musicalité, manque de créativité, au sens large du terme. Mais ce sont juste des hypothèses. Car avec un ensemble aussi imposant qu’efficace, ION DISSONANCE est de ces formations qui n’ont pas besoin de lignes mélodiques ou d’effets synthétiques pour se faire comprendre. Et je dirais surtout que ces canadiens ont quelques chose en eux de très naturel et qui forge un certain respect. L’autorité.
