Eloignez-vous de l’écran. Encore un peu. Voilà. Maintenant fixez la pochette de cet album. Sérieusement, ne dirait-on pas deux chibres bien veineux et fièrement tendus ? ATTACK ATTACK !, un groupe de bites ? Allez, je vous épargnerais volontiers les raisons que j’ai de croire que ces américains sont moins cons et nuls qu’on veut bien le croire. Eux qui ont fortement contribué à l’expansion de la génération mèches-sur-les-yeux et genoux-en-équerre ont bien grandi depuis un certain Someday Came Suddenly en 2008. Johnny Franck (alias Boucle d’Or) est parti. Caleb Shomo, ce gentil pourceau qui tient le micro n’a plus que deux ans à tenir avant de pouvoir picoler en toute légalité sur le territoire américain. Et surtout, ATTACK ATTACK! est de retour avec This Means War, le troisième volet de leurs aventures rocambolesques. Et le moins que l’on puisse dire, c’est que ce concentré d’énergie est étonnant à bien des égards.
Qu’on se le dise pour dit, les américains n’ont plus rien de distrayant. Ceux qui auraient souhaité se rapprocher de ce disque pour se marrer éternellement sur les plans crabbys grotesques, les paroles débiles ou les attitudes de poseurs peuvent se jeter sans coup férir sur DESIGN THE SKYLINE ou ASKING ALEXANDRIA pour cracher leur venin. J’ai le regret de vous annoncer qu’ATTACK ATTACK! est rentré dans le rang. Je ne sais pas trop si c’est une marque de maturité ou le manifeste d’un ras-le-bol d’être sans arrêt pris pour des buses, mais on ne peut que constater que la musique des ricains s’est modifiée, pour aller chatouiller des aisselles qui ne transpirent plus vraiment le Deathcore-Carambar. Oubliés les samples avec un flow tirant sur le Rap US ou le Crunk, oubliés les instrumentales Electro-Dancefloor pétillante et précieuses comme un Taittinger, oubliés les nappes de claviers symphos et pianos délicats, oubliés les breakdowns comateux élevés en batterie et pondus à tire-larigot, oublié les couplets grognés et les refrains chantés. Tout est remis en cause. L’estomac tiraillé entre le sentiment de devoir à jamais tirer un trait sur l’ancienne version d’ATTACK ATTACK! et celui de découvrir avec bonheur le nouveau visage musical de ces garçons, cet album se déroule sans trop d’encombres. Le changement le plus radical se niche dans les vocaux de Caleb Shomo. Pour la première fois, il abandonne partiellement ses growls gutturaux pour visiter une ligne de chant plus aigue, entre un Scream rugueux et des hurlements qui se mêlent avec vivacité au chant clair qui, lui, suit la continuité de l’album éponyme. Une partition autrement mieux construite que les précédentes. Sinon, on retrouve pas mal de modifications sur les parties instrumentales, notamment une plus grosse explosivité de la basse qui oriente davantage leur Deathcore vers un Metal moderne mariant les ritournelles ouvertement Pop de 30 SECONDS TO MARS avec la rigidité et la rondeur de riffs qui touchent un peu au sonorités Djent. ATTACK ATTACK! est méconnaissable et on ne peut que se réjouir d’un changement si impressionnant. Je n’ai aucun doute qu’avec ce troisième effort, malgré une ouverture musicale un peu radicale qui en décevra certains, beaucoup se repentiront et s’étonneront de trouver pour la première fois quelques qualités à ce combo.
Parmi ces dernières, un chant clair qui a une excellente tenue de route, une disparition quasi-intégrale des passages Euro-Trance, des créations solidement bâties et cohérentes qui vous feront oublier la période « Stick Stickly ». Alors on pourra se poiler encore longtemps sur un passé discutable. Peut-être qu’ATTACK ATTACK! paraissait moins fade à l’époque. Mais c’est tellement encourageant de penser qu’enfin, cette réputation de bêtes de foires va les quitter. Vous verrez, ce disque fera beaucoup moins parler de lui, car il est devenu conforme. Et moins nos ricains feront de bruit, mieux ce sera.
