Th1rt3en, qui succède à l'excellent Endgame sorti il y a deux ans, signe la fin de la collaboration entre MEGADETH et Roadrunner, mais célèbre aussi le retour en fanfare de l'autre Dave, le sieur Ellefson, qui avait quitté le groupe en 2001. Est-ce pour autant un gage de qualité ? Peu importe serait je tenté de dire, mais je dois avouer que de retrouver Dave dans le giron de MEGADETH me fait assez plaisir, lui qui fut le seul à pouvoir épauler et supporter Mustaine aussi longtemps.
A propos de notre rouquin préféré, notons qu'il reste impeccable tout le long de ce nouvel album, nous offrant des vocaux bien rauques et teigneux, dans la plus grande tradition des années 80, début 90.
Alors digressons, digressons....Nous savons tous que MEGADETH a toujours eu un gros problème, l'homogénéité. Sur bon nombre de ses albums se trouvent toujours deux ou trois titres impeccables, un hit monstrueux, et surtout, pas mal de remplissage.
Endgame semblait infléchir cette tendance, et se montrait bien plus équilibré que nombre de ses prédécesseurs. Il en va de même avec Th1rt3en, qui ne marche pas non plus sur trois pattes dès les quatre premiers morceaux passés.
Certains d'entre eux ont d'ailleurs été composés il y a pas mal de temps selon Ellefson. "Black Swan" figurait déjà en bonus track d'United Abomination, le riff de "Deadly Deadshade" a été composé durant les sessions de Youthaniasia, "Millennium of the Blind" remonte à 1991, et "New World Order" fut rodé lors du Clash Of The Titans de 1991 aussi.
Est-ce pour autant que Th1rt3en doit être envisagé comme un assemblage de bric et de broc un peu bancal ? Pas du tout. Il se hisse largement au même niveau de Endgame, et lui est même supérieur en certaines occasions. Commencez donc par avaler goulûment la triplette d'intro, "Sudden Death" et son ambiance très Countdown To Extinction, le très roublard "Public Enemy No. 1", et le très catchy "Whose Life (Is It Anyways ?)", et vous comprendrez que l'ivresse n'est pas très loin. C'est puissant, accrocheur tout en restant très Heavy, en gros, du MEGADETH de haute volée comme on l'aime, et comme Mustaine est capable de nous en fournir lorsqu'il est en forme et qu'il ne pilote pas en roue libre.
Alors le Dave s'amuse, et louvoie entre le swing léger mâtiné d'esprit frondeur ("Guns, Drugs, & Money" et sa double grosse caisse bien sentie sur le pré refrain), la ballade classique mais vénéneuse («Millennium of the Blind"), le chaloupé bien méchant ( "Deadly Deadshade", un des meilleurs moments de l'album), et les ambiances sombres et délétères ("13" qui clôture le disque de bien belle façon avec son mélange d'arpèges et de riffs plombés portés par une mélodie maladive). Et même si le mid tempo est roi, de Th1rt3en se dégage une incroyable sensation de puissance, certainement accentuée par l'inventivité et la régularité des guitares et une section rythmique concise mais inventive. Fini les morceaux bouche-trous, fini le remplissage facile, MEGADETH a pris conscience que ses fans ne pouvaient plus se contenter de titres enregistrés à la va-vite, et se permet même, comme à la grande époque de Peace Sells, de multiplier les variations sans pour autant verser dans la modulation excessive ("New World Order" et ses différentes parties assemblées avec génie).
Et du coup, on pourrait presque croire que Th1rt3en aurait du être la suite logique de Youthanasia, tout en restant quelque part une fusion naturelle et évidente des influences de So Far, So Good, So What ?, Countdown To Extinction et... Youthanasia justement.
Rien n'est parfait bien sur, et certains morceaux restent en deçà des standards de qualité du groupe, mais l'ensemble nous rassure quant aux capacités de composition du quartette, et Th1rt3en entérine le retour de Mustaine au premier plan, retour déjà bien fêté avec Endgame il y a deux ans.
Si MEGADETH continue sur cette voie, gageons que la fin de l'histoire n'est pas pour toute suite. 1984-2011, treize albums, et toujours une santé de fer.
